Pera Helps Lead ABA Effort to Modernize Rules on Lawyer Advertising 
The ABA House of Delegates Aug. 6 voted in favor of amending Rule 7 of ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, which addresses lawyer advertising, the ABA Journal reports.

Knoxville lawyer PAUL EDWARD DUNN died on July 21. He was 87. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Dunn graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1961. Dunn practiced law in Knoxville for more than 40 years. He began practicing with renowned criminal defense lawyer Ray H. Jenkins and remained with the firm Jenkins and Jenkins until 1995, when he became a founding member of the firm Dunn, MacDonald and Coleman. He was named a Senior Counselor by the Tennessee Bar Association, and an honorary member of the Winfield Dunn cabinet.

Increased Indigent Defense Rates Now in Effect

The new 25 percent pay increase for indigent defense officially went into effect on July 1. The increase, the first of its kind in 20 years, was approved by the General Assembly this year. The hourly rate paid to court-appointed lawyers representing indigent parties is now $50 an hour for all services, while limits on the total amount of compensation a lawyer can receive in certain cases have been raised by $250 to $500.

Former Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice EDWARD RILEY ANDERSON died in July at the age of 85. In his judicial career, Anderson served three years on the Court of Appeals, 16 years on the Tennessee Supreme Court, and five terms as chief justice. During his tenure on the Supreme Court, he led the way for innovative improvements to the outreach and functionality of the Tennessee judiciary. When he retired from the court in 2006, Anderson had served as chief justice longer than anyone else in the preceding 40 years.

Mike Carter, a Chattanooga attorney and chairman of the House Civil Justice Subcommittee, attended an out-of-state conference where he was introduced to a data-driven computer application designed to promote placement stability and permanency for children in foster care by matching children and families based on markers of compatibility.

Nashville lawyer PAUL ARTHUR ALEXIS died on May 22 at the age of 72. Born in Pittsburgh, Alexis attended Georgetown University Law Center, where he was managing editor of the law journal. He joined the law firm of Donovan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine in Manhattan before being recruited by the Nashville based Genesco Inc., as deputy general counsel. He subsequently joined the Nashville law firm of Boult, Cummings, Connors & Berry, where he practiced commercial litigation and served as loss prevention partner.

Report:?Tennessee Lawyers Rated High for Pro Bono Work

Attorneys in Tennessee reported performing an average of 53.1 hours of pro bono in 2016 — the second highest rate among all states taking part in a new American Bar Association survey.
