NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR ATJ AWARDS

The TBA seeks nominations for five prestigious access-to-justice-related awards, to be presented at two events in 2018.

Longtime University of Tennessee General Counsel BEAUCHAMP “BEACH” E. BROGAN died on July 9. He was 87. Brogan earned his law degree from the University of Kentucky, and served as head litigator for the Tennessee Valley Authority before joining the university in 1975. He served as general counsel and secretary to the UT Board of Trustees until his retirement in 1999. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and qualified to attend college with education benefits via the federal G.I. Bill, which he did at UT.

FRANK S. KING JR. of Brentwood died on June 12 at 92. King served for three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and when he returned home earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University. He was a former magistrate of the Davidson County Quarterly Court, a former assistant city attorney for Nashville and former city attorney for Brentwood. He founded the firm of King and Ballow in 1969 and was in practice for 60 years. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brentwood United Methodist Church Foundation, 309 Franklin Road, Brentwood, 37027.

Tennessee Civil Rights Cold Case Act Signed by Governor 
A bill that would create a legislative committee to study unsolved civil rights cold cases was signed into law by Gov. Bill Haslam on June 6.

CLIFFORD JOY HARRISON of Nashville died on May 8. He was 92. Before earning his law degree from Nashville School of Law, Harrison served in World War II, where he flew 35 missions in Europe as a part of the Army Air Corps. Harrison continued his military service in the Air Force reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, and was later a member of the Middle Tennessee WWII Fighter Pilots Association. He began his professional career at Third National Bank in 1950 and retired as Vice Chairman of the Board.
