SUPREME COURT SWEARS IN NEW ATTORNEYS ACROSS THE STATE

More than 450 people passed the July 2016 bar exam and hundreds of them chose to be sworn in to the practice of law by the Tennessee Supreme Court, according to the Administrative Office of the Court. Ceremonies were held in November in Jackson, Memphis, Knoxville and Nashville.

During 2017, the following officers, governors and delegates of the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) will be elected as set forth in the association’s bylaws:

TBA Officers and Board of Governors

A vice president (from the East Tennessee Grand Division — elected by the association’s membership-at-large). The vice president automatically assumes the office of president-elect in 2019 and president in 2020.

Jackson lawyer JERRY BOB CULLEN died Oct. 26 at the age of 89. Cullen served in the U.S. Navy from June 1945 to August 1946, obtaining the rank of Seaman First Class. After discharge, he attended Vanderbilt University Law School and earned his law degree in 1951. Cullen worked for United States Fidelity Company as a claims adjustor for 39 years. He retired in 1991. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Jackson, 1627 N. Highland, Jackson, TN 38305.

Court Issues Order Amending TCCA Rule 7

November 10, 2016

The Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals issued an order today amending Rule 7 of its rules. The order deletes Rule 7 in its entirety and substitutes the following language: “Motions in this Court shall be in conformity with Rule 22, Tennessee Rules of Appellate Procedure. The proponent of a motion is not required to submit a proposed order.” Get the order here.

JAMES ALFRED ANDERSON of Chattanooga died Sept. 26 at the age of 69. A graduate of the Nashville School of Law, Anderson opened his own law practice and later served as magistrate judge for Hamilton County and on the local election commission. Before becoming an attorney, he held a number of positions in government, including posts at the Department of Employment Security, Affirmative Action Commission, Metropolitan Work Incentive Program, TVA and Human Rights Commission of Chattanooga.

BIVINS ELECTED STATE SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICE

The Tennessee Supreme Court elected Justice Jeff Bivins to be the next chief justice of the court in August. His term began Sept. 1.
