New System for Disciplining Judges Passes Legislature
Legislation that puts into place a new system for disciplining judges won House approval Monday night on an 88-5 vote without any debate. The Senate had earlier approved SB2671 unanimously, so the bill now goes to the governor. The bill abolishes the Court of the Judiciary and replaces it with a new 16-member Board of Judicial Conduct. ‘Hometown Support’ Provides Legal Help for Military

The Tennessee Bar Association’s Access to Justice Committee is proud to announce “Hometown Support,” a new program that makes free legal help available to service members and their families with limited income who are facing legal problems in Tennessee. The efforts will connect eligible service members with volunteer lawyers who are willing to help.

A program that sends practicing and retired attorneys and judges into the community to speak to groups is getting some positive attention. The relatively new GAVELS program (Gaining Access to Valuable Education about the Legal System), created by the Tennessee Judicial Conference and Tennessee Bar Association, has already had many requests for speakers. Court adopts TBA's judicial conduct proposal

On Jan. 4 the Tennessee Supreme Court adopted the first comprehensive rewrite of the rules governing judicial conduct in more than 20 years. The rules changes, effective July 1, come as a result of a two and a half-year process initiated by the Tennessee Bar Association including a public comment period and hearing. "The Court has demonstrated it will do what is necessary to maintain public trust and confidence in our justice system.
