As part of Help4TN Month, Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands Executive Director DarKenya Waller is highlighting the importance of civil legal aid and the resources available through the Help4TN initiative. The campaign aims to raise awareness about free and low-cost legal services across the state, offering Tennesseans support on issues like housing, family law and consumer rights. The TBA Young Lawyers Division is partnering with Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands for an expungement clinic on May 19. Volunteers are needed from 4-7 p.m. CDT at Doors of Hope located at 428 E. Bell St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130. Contact Morgan Hanna for more information and to volunteer.

The Tennessee Justice Bus is partnering with Knoxville Area Urban League to host an expungement clinic on April 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST as part of Help4TN Month. The clinic will offer participants an expungement screening with a volunteer attorney, who will assist in reviewing available online records. Attendees will receive information on which records may be eligible for expungement and learn about the steps to begin the expungement process. The Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Initiative is sharing updates about the month through a digital campaign and calendar of events. For 2025, the initiative is focused on providing information for the public on “the where, why and how of legal resources across Tennessee.”

Attorneys are needed to assist with a Free Legal Advice Clinic from 9-11 a.m. EDT on April 5 at Good Samaritan Ministries, 100 N. Roan St., Johnson City 37601. Volunteers will help answer legal questions for individuals in need. Attorneys interested in volunteering should email Thomas Smith at tsmith@garzalaw.com.

The next legal clinic for veterans in Knoxville will take place April 9 from 12-2 p.m. EST at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. This is a general advice clinic sponsored by the Knoxville Bar Association, KBA Barristers, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, the University of Tennessee College of Law, the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office and the local Veterans Affairs office. The TBA Access to Justice Committee is accepting nominations for the 2025 Public Service Awards. The annual awards recognize outstanding commitment to access to justice in three categories: work performed by an attorney employed by an organization primarily involved in providing legal representation to the indigent, pro bono work performed by a private or corporate attorney, and a strong commitment to pro bono service by a Tennessee law student or recent graduate. Nominations and supporting documents will be accepted through April 10. Awards will be presented during the TBA Annual Convention in June.

Registration is now open for the next free advice clinic for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits, set for April 17 in Nashville. The clinic, sponsored by the Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts and Bradley, provides assistance with business formation and corporate governance, review of contracts and guidance in navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Register by April 14 to participate. Attorneys should email vlpa@abcnashville.org to volunteer.

West Tennessee Legal Services (WTLS) will host a virtual Simple Wills & POAs clinic for clients across West Tennessee on March 27 and 28. Attorneys can volunteer from anywhere and will be scheduled based on their availability. They will use WTLS automation software to complete documents with clients. Volunteers will receive specific times to call clients while WTLS will handle coordination for document signing. Volunteers can sign up by the end of this week. To volunteer please fill out the WTLS online form.

The Washington County Bar Association is asking for volunteer lawyers to help residents of northeast Tennessee with legal needs following Hurricane Helene. The Advocacy Committee of the Washington County Long Term Recovery Group is a group of volunteers continuing to assist residents affected by the hurricane. Those interested in helping with intake or assisting with pro bono representation should contact Melissa Reading, 423-794-4009. The next meeting of the committee is March 19 at noon EDT via Zoom.
