Bob Corlew, a former General Sessions and Chancery Court judge, has announced he is running for the 6th Congressional District seat currently occupied by Rep. Diane Black, The Tennessean reports. Corlew, a Wilson County resident, also served in the U.S. Army after graduating law school. Black is currently running for governor and will not seek reelection. State Sen. Mark Green, state Rep. Judd Matheny, CNN contributor Scottie Nell Hughes and former Tennessee Department of Agriculture commissioner John Rose have also expressed interest in the position.

Gary Humble, former assistant U.S. attorney in Chattanooga, is running for the post of Signal Mountain town judge in the Aug. 2 election, the Times Free Press reports. He is the only candidate to have filed his qualifying petition so far. Since his retirement from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Humble has maintained a private law practice, and has also previously served as an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee College of Law.

Assistant United States Attorney Gary S. Humble announced Thursday that he has filed a qualifying petition for the post of Signal Mountain Town Judge with the Hamilton County Election Commission, Chattanoogan.com reports. The non-partisan election is set for Aug. 2. Humble was a prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chattanooga from 1987 to 2011. Mark Rothberger was Signal Mountain judge from 1996 until his retirement last year. Tracy Cox had been appointed interim judge.

State Rep. Courtney Rogers, R-Goodlettsville, will not seek reelection in House District 45 this year, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Rogers has served three terms in the legislature. District 45 includes parts of Sumner County, including Goodlettsville, Millersville and portions of Hendersonville.

State House Rep. Raumesh Akbari will run for the Tennessee Senate, LocalMemphis.com reports. Akbari has served in the House for two terms as a Democrat and is seeking the District 29 Senate seat recently vacated by Sen. Lee Harris, who resigned to run for Shelby County Mayor.

Gabriela Salinas, a three-time cancer survivor who once gained media attention while being treated at St. Jude’s Hospital as a child, has announced her candidacy for the Tennessee Senate, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Salinas will seek the Democratic nomination for the District 31 seat, currently occupied by Republican Brian Kelsey of Germantown. District 31 covers parts of Shelby County, including Germantown, Collierville and Cordova.

Today is the first day for candidates for public office in 2018’s August primary ballot to pick up petitions. Individuals interested in running for office should pick up a nominating petition at their local election commission office. The deadline to submit petitions for the August ballot is April 5.

State House District 24 Rep. Kevin Brooks announced he will not seek reelection for his seat, opting instead to run for mayor of Cleveland, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Current Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland said he would not run again and endorsed Brooks’ candidacy. House District 24 includes parts of Bradley County.

Amidst multiple allegations and charges against current Sheriff Eric Watson, the chief of the Criminal Investigations Division at the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, Capt. Steve Lawson, has resigned and picked up papers to challenge Watson in the next election. The Times Free Press reports that Lawson said he “can no longer respect or believe the person I work for.” Watson, who faces trial on Jan. 22 for 12 felony counts of having or using forged auto titles, has announced he would seek reelection.

State House Rep. John Forgety, R-Athens, has announced he will retire from the Tennessee General Assembly after the completion of his fourth term this year, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Forgety, a former teacher and veteran, currently serves as chair of the House Education Instructions and Program Committee. Forgety represents House District 23, which covers all of McMinn and parts of Monroe counties.
