The Tennessee Lawyers' Association for Women (TLAW) will host its 8th Annual Empowerment Conference on Dec. 12 at Holland & Knight's downtown Nashville office. A mediator/ADR panel will be moderated by retired Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon Lee, and will feature Germantown attorney Anne Davis with the Gill Law Firm, retired Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Janice Holder and Brentwood attorney Anne Hunter. The session will explore best practices in mediation, alternative dispute resolution and ethical considerations, offering practical strategies for navigating complex legal matters. The Tennessee Department of Revenue will host a free webinar on refunds and penalty waivers on Nov. 25 at 9 a.m. CST. Staff will discuss the process for applying for refunds and penalty waivers, including approvals and denials, statutes of limitations, common issues and more. The Nashville Bar Association (NBA) will hold its Fall Memorial Service this Thursday at 11 a.m. CST. The event will take place at The Downtown Presbyterian Church, 154 Rep. John Lewis Way N., Nashville 37219. A complimentary lunch will be held after the service, provided by an anonymous donor. Services to be offered include expungements, voter reinstatements, driver's license reinstatements and resume help. The event will take place at the Hickory Hill Community Center, 3910 Ridgeway Rd., Memphis 38115 from 9 a.m. to noon CST. Fill out this form to volunteer. See a flyer for more information.

The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) will hold its Fall Memorial Service on Nov. 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. EST at the Tennessee Supreme Court Building, 505 Main St. in Knoxville. The event, which is free and open to attendees, will take place in the Supreme Court courtroom on the building’s second floor. The service is to celebrate the careers, honor, applaud and express gratitude for the members of the Knoxville bar who have died since the last memorial service. Joining KBA President Jonathan Cooper in reflecting on and celebrating the lives of these individuals will be the Rev. Charles Fels and Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Dwight Tarwater. Baker Donelson and the University of Tennessee Baker School of Public Policy and Public Affairs will host an invitation-only event Nov. 12 from 2 to 6 p.m. CST at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville to celebrate the 100th birthday and legacy of former U.S. Sen. Howard H. Baker Jr. Baker, Tennessee’s first popularly elected Republican senator, was known for his civility, bipartisanship and decades of public service, including roles as Senate majority leader and White House chief of staff to President Ronald Reagan. The program will feature former U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tennessee, and  Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota; attorney and former ambassador A.B. Culvahouse; Knoxville businessman James A. Haslam II, who worked as a fundraiser for Baker; health care executive Alan Levine; author Jon Meacham; and Emily Reynolds, who worked as a special assistant to Baker. The Knox County Juvenile Court will hold its annual Chili Cook-Off Luncheon & Basket Auction on Nov. 14. All proceeds will benefit the Annual Foster Care Appreciation Dinner for foster care parents and go to meet emergency needs of children in foster care. On Nov. 18, the TBA Appellate Practice Section will host a free webinar titled "Application Granted: Strategies for Seeking Permission to Appeal Under Tenn. Rule of Appellate Procedure 11." The session will provide guidance for lawyers seeking permission to appeal a civil or criminal case to the state Supreme Court. Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Jeff Bivins, court staff attorneys Elizabeth Ryan and Edmund Sauer, and experienced appellate practitioners Brennan Wingerter and Kristine Roberts will share best practices, lessons learned and practical advice for getting an application granted.
