The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings to provide free legal services for nonprofits and Black-owned small businesses in Nashville on Nov. 16. Advice will cover business formation, corporate governance, contracts and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Eligible entities may receive up to one hour of assistance. The American Bar Association Section of State and Local Government Law will host a free webinar on firearms law on Nov. 8 at 12:30 p.m. EST. Experts from the Duke Center for Firearms Law will participate in a conversation about the legal issues surrounding gun policy, including what state and local officials are doing in the areas of policymaking, law enforcement and litigation to help lower the incidence of gun violence and mass shootings. The Legal Aid Society will host a free legal clinic for Davidson County residents on Wednesday at the downtown Nashville Public Library, 615 Church St., Nashville 37219 4-6 p.m. CDT. Volunteer attorneys are needed to help provide legal advice. This legal clinic will help people with civil legal issues such as family law, consumer law, debt collections, power of attorney, employment law, health law, public benefits, housing, probate/estate, wills and bankruptcy. The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law will host a conversation between the Hon. Bernice Bouie Donald and Professor Daniel Kiel on Nov. 6 at 3:30 p.m. CDT at Wade Auditorium at the University of Memphis, 1 North Front St., Memphis 38103. Donald and Kiel will discuss Kiel's recent book, 'The Transition: Interpreting Justice from Thurgood Marshall to Clarence Thomas,' which explores the lives and writings of the first two African-American justices on Supreme Court.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee will unveil portraits of Noah Parden and Styles Hutchins in a ceremony at the Joel W. Solomon Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse on Wednesday at 2 p.m. EDT, the Chattanoogan reports. Parden and Hutchins, two African-American attorneys from Chattanooga, obtained a stay of execution in 1906 for Ed Johnson, an African-American criminal defendant, in the U.S. Supreme Court. Despite the stay of execution, a mob forced its way into the county jail where Johnson was held and hanged him from the Walnut Street bridge. The portraits will be displayed outside the third-floor courtroom of the Solomon Federal Building. The Supreme Court Historical Society will also announce "The Supreme Court and My Hometown," a two-week summer day camp for local high school students featuring an intensive study of the process and substantive issues of cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will hold three legal clinics in November. The “Attorney of the Day Clinic” will take place Nov. 2 and 16 from 1-3 p.m. CST at the Shelby County Courthouse, 140 Adams Ave., Room 134, Memphis 38103. The monthly Saturday clinic at the Benjamin Hooks Library will take place Nov. 11 beginning at 10 a.m. The library is located at 3030 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38111.
