Nashville School of Law Dean William C. Koch Jr. has been selected to receive the 2023 American Inns of Court A. Sherman Christensen Award for distinguished, exceptional and significant leadership to the American Inns of Court movement at the local, state or national level. Koch will receive the award in October at the 2023 American Inns of Court Celebration of Excellence at the Supreme Court of the United States. Koch has been a member of the organization since 1990 and its president from 2018-2020. Koch has served as president and dean of the Nashville School of Law since 2014, while also teaching constitutional law. He served as a justice on the Supreme Court of Tennessee from 2007 to 2014.

The Sevier County Bar Association is sponsoring the 9th Annual Sevier County Juvenile CLE Seminar on Oct. 24, with all proceeds benefiting the Women’s Recovery Home. The virtual program will include seven hours of CLE credit and will cover juvenile law topics applicable statewide. 

The Nashville Chapter of the American Constitutional Society is holding its annual U.S. Supreme Court Preview on Sept. 14 from noon to 1:30 p.m. CDT at the Nashville offices of Holland & Knight. A virtual attendance option also is available. The event will feature New York University School of Law professor Melissa Murray, co-author of “Cases and Materials on Reproductive Rights and Justice” and co-host of the Supreme Court podcast “Strict Scrutiny.”

The repayment pause on federal student loans ended Aug. 31. Interest will begin to accrue this month and payments will begin again in October. Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will hold its monthly clinic at the Benjamin Hooks Library this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon CDT. The library is located at 3030 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38111. Lawyers and non-lawyers are needed for this high-volume clinic. Questions commonly raised by clients include issues involving housing, family, consumer and employment law. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands (LAS) will host nine legal clinics in Nashville during September, two of which will be veterans only clinics. For information on dates, times and locations, visit the LAS website.

A special invitation has been extended to those serving in the legal and law profession to celebrate the Annual Diocesan Red Mass at 5 p.m. CDT on Sept. 16 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1695 Central Ave., Memphis 38104. As a time-honored tradition of the Catholic Church, the Red Mass is celebrated for judges, attorneys, law school professors, students and government officials, invoking guidance for all who seek justice.

Memphis Area Legal Services will host its Attorney of the Day clinic on Sept. 7 beginning at 1 p.m. CDT. During the clinic, volunteer attorneys will meet with pro se litigants to provide help and make referrals. Clients are seen on a first come first serve basis. The Association for Women Attorneys Foundation will host its annual Mary Wolff Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 11. The event will take place at The Links at Galloway, 3815 Walnut Grove Rd., Memphis 38111. Registration and lunch will begin at noon followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. CDT. The 2023 Equal Justice University (EJU) kicks off this week in Murfreesboro, starting with a meeting of the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS) board Tuesday evening. Wednesday's opening plenary speaker is Rachel Rossi, director of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office for Access to Justice, followed by Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Bivins speaking at the Welcome Luncheon. Wednesday afternoon, the Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission meets and breakout sessions continue. The evening concludes with the annual Access to Justice Awards Dinner. On Thursday, the TBA Access to Justice Committee meets and TBA President Jim Barry speaks at lunch. The event wraps up Friday morning with a keynote address by Legal Services Corporation President Ron Flagg. The conference is presented by TALS and co-sponsored by the TBA and others.
