Don't miss the Policing in America CLE presentation from the TBA and Tennessee Alliance for Black Lawyers (TABL) at the TBA Convention in Knoxville. There are over 18,000 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, all with their own rules. Chief Paul Noel of the Knoxville Police Department, Chief Celeste Murphy from the Chattanooga Police Department and Assistant Chief Dwayne Greene of the Nashville Police Department, as well as federal public defender Dumaka Shabazz, will discuss how these differences impact the communities they serve. The panel will be moderated by Brooklyn Sawyers Belk, the Knoxville Police Department attorney and deputy chief. A reception will follow the program. The TBA Elder Law and Juvenile Law sections will provide a free one-hour webinar tomorrow at 2 p.m. CDT, covering when you need guardian ad litem in domestic law cases versus when you need guardian ad litem in probate cases. The TBA Young Lawyers Division is hosting a debt relief clinic on June 3 at 9 a.m. CDT. The clinic is fully virtual and will start with a presentation from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Ruthie Hagan. Low-income debtors then will meet with volunteer attorneys in Zoom breakout rooms for counsel and advice on bankruptcy and other debt relief options. The clinic is hosted in partnership with the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, West Tennessee Legal Services and Legal Aid of East Tennessee, among others. Two free legal help clinics are scheduled for next week in Nashville, hosted by the Legal Aid Society for Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands (LAS). May 24 is a veterans only clinic from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. CDT at Operation Stand Down, 112 12th Ave. S. Nashville 37203. On May 27, a clinic will take place from 9:30-11:30 a.m. CDT at Belmont Ministry Center, 2005 12th Ave. S, Nashville 37204.

Belmont University will host the first televised Nashville mayoral debate tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. CDT at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Nine candidates will join co-moderator David Plazas from The Tennessean and Carrie Sharp from NewsChannel 5 for a 90-minute question and answer session. The event will air on NewsChannel 5. The debate series is sponsored by The Tennessean, NewsChannel 5 and the League of Women Voters of Nashville. Future events will take place on June 22, July 6 and Aug. 24. Read more from the school.

The 29th annual "Ode to Otha" event, hosted by Neal & Harwell's Bill Ramsey, will be held June 3. The event celebrates the birthday of legendary musician Otha Turner while also raising money for Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. The University of Memphis School of Law will host a workshop on June 14 on “Making the Move From Practice to Professor.” The event is designed for attorneys who are interested in joining the law school as a full-time, tenure-track law professor but do not know how to take the first step. Among the sessions being offered at the TBA’s Annual Convention June 14-17 in Knoxville is the Bench Bar Program, which brings together lawyers and judges. This year’s program will focus on the law and sports with sessions on leadership, the legal history of women’s basketball in the state and how new “name, image and likeness” rules are benefiting athletes.
