The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings to provide free legal services for nonprofits and Black-owned small businesses in Nashville on May 18. Advice will cover business formation, corporate governance, contracts and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Eligible entities may receive up to one hour of assistance. The Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board will hear arguments during the bureau’s upcoming educational conference. The case, Martinez v. ACG Roofing Inc., involves an insurance coverage dispute and multiple alleged employers. The arguments will take place on June 15 at 1:45 p.m. CDT at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro.

On May 16, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Shelley D. Rucker will preside over two naturalization ceremonies during which approximately 100 people are expected to take the Oath of Allegiance to become American citizens. The ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. EDT in the Third Floor Courtroom of the Joel W. Solomon Federal Building, at 900 Georgia Ave. in Chattanooga.

The Legal Aid Society (LAS) will host a free clinic May 16 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. CDT for victims of stalking or harassment. The event will take place at the Nashville Family Justice Center, 610 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville 37210. Metro Police will be on hand to check cars for tracking devices while lawyers will offer legal advice. The Second Quarter Restoration Clinic will be held at the Bordeaux-North Community Justice Center in Nashville, 2013 25th Ave. N. in Room 23, on Saturday, May 6, at 9 a.m. CDT. The Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association (TTLA) has created the Larry Daughtrey Courage in Journalism Award to be given periodically to a journalist who has covered civil justice issues of public interest to Tennesseans. The award is named after reporter and journalist Larry Daughtrey, whose career began during the civil rights movement and spanned nearly 50 years. Judges will be looking for someone who has ethically shined light on issues that might otherwise have been forgotten, presented complex issues to the public in a fair and understandable way, and displayed courage in their journalism. The deadline to receive nominations is May 15.

In addition to compelling CLE, social events and networking opportunities, the 2023 TBA Annual Convention will host several meetings of TBA governing bodies. On June 14, the House of Delegates will meet in the afternoon, while new section chairs will meet to make plans for the 2023-2024 bar year. On June 16, the TBA Board of Governors and its Executive Committee will meet after the Lawyers Luncheon. Later that afternoon, the Tennessee Legal Community Foundation (TLCF) and TBA Member Insurance Solutions (TBAMS) will hold their respective board meetings. Wrapping up the day, the Young Lawyers Division's (YLD) Long Range Planning Committee will meet and all young lawyer members of the TBA will gather for the division's annual meeting.
