Newly elected Shelby County Circuit Court Judge Damita J. Dandridge will be sworn into office on Friday at 1 p.m. CDT. U.S. District Judge John T. Fowlkes Jr. will preside over the investiture ceremony, which will be held at the Shelby County Commission Chambers, 160 N. Main, Memphis. Dandridge will be sworn in by Judges Rhynette N. Hurd and Gina C. Higgins. Prior to her election, Dandridge worked as a Judicial Commissioner Judge for 20 years and also served 30 years as a professor at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis. The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings in providing free legal services for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits at a clinic on Oct. 20. Issues to be covered include questions about business formation, corporate governance, contract review and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. The University of Memphis School of Law will host an event focused on the history and intensive redesign of the school’s historic building on Nov. 4. The session will focus on the building’s transformation from a U.S. customs house, a federal courthouse and a U.S. post office into the law school’s current facility. The Youth Court Program for juveniles in Shelby County is looking for volunteers. The time commitment for attorneys is minimal and flexible. The next Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic — a joint project of Knoxville area legal organizations — will take place this coming Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. EDT at the Knoxville Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St. This general advice and referral clinic is supported by the Knoxville Bar Association Barristers and Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, University of Tennessee  College of Law, Lincoln Memorial University-Duncan School of Law, and the local Veterans Affairs office. The Nashville Chapter of the American Constitutional Society will offer its annual U.S. Supreme Court preview on Oct. 18 from noon to 1 p.m. CDT. This year’s program will feature Mark Joseph Stern, a senior writer covering courts and the law for Slate Magazine. Based in Washington, D.C., Stern has covered the U.S. Supreme Court, federal appellate and district courts, as well as various state and local courts since 2013. Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will host its annual fundraiser, the Justice for All Ball, on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. CDT. The event will be held at the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education in Memphis and will feature dinner from Chef Phillip Dewayne and entertainment from the Stax Music Academy Band, the Beale Street Flippers and the PC Band. Proceeds from the event will benefit MALS and support attorneys offering pro bono legal services to the underserved population in Memphis. The American Bar Association Section of Science & Technology Law will hold its 2022 AI and Robotics National Institute virtually next week on Monday and Tuesday.
