Governor’s Office Seeking Middle Tennessee Claims Commissioner

Gov. Bill Lee’s office is now accepting applications for a position on the Tennessee Claims Commission for the Middle Division, due to a vacancy that’s expected once the current commissioner’s term is up on June 30. Qualified applications should have lived in Tennessee for five years prior to appointment and have been licensed to practice law in the state for the same amount of time. A term last for eight years and the commissioner may not practice law while serving. Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) is seeking a full-time staff attorney for LAET’s Johnson City or Morristown office to handle public benefit cases and other general civil litigation. The ideal candidate will have six years of experience or less, including experience with public benefits cases and litigating cases in a variety of courts. Stephanie Mitchell Hughes describes her lifelong struggle, including uneasiness over taking medication and thoughts of suicide. It is important to speak honestly about mental health issues, she said, in order to end the stigma surrounding them and encourage others to get help. "The legal profession must stop pretending that the proverbial emperor is wearing clothes," Hughes writes. "Contrary to popular belief, we are merely human."

The vacancy was created by the upcoming retirement of the Claudia C. Bonnyman, who will end her service effective Jan. 1, 2019.
