Lipscomb University’s Fred D. Gray Institute for Law, Justice & Society will host “A Conversation with the Women of the Tennessee Supreme Court” on Feb. 10 at the George Shinn Center. The event will feature sitting justices Cornelia A. Clark, Holly Kirby and Sharon G. Lee and former justices Janice Holder and Penny White, who will talk about the law, the court and their lives. TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson will moderate the event. A reception begins at 6 p.m. followed by dinner and program at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 each. Proceeds benefit the Fred D. Gray Scholarship, which is given to students majoring in Law, Justice and Society. Access the event program.

Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will hold its Attorney of the Day Clinic on Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. each day. Volunteer attorneys will be in Room 134 of the Judge D’Army Bailey Shelby County Courthouse, 140 Adams Ave., to meet with pro se litigants and provide advice, counsel and referrals. Clients are seen on a first-come first-serve basis.

The TBA Corporate Counsel Section is hosting a one-hour CLE with lunch tomorrow from noon to 1 p.m. at the Tennessee Bar Center. The course will focus on privacy laws with a discussion of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

January is also loaded with great CLE programming from the TBA. It kicks off Friday with the Transactional Practice six-hour seminar produced by the TBA's Young Lawyers Division. Next week the Environmental Law Section will host its annual forum on Jan. 17 in Nashville. The following Friday will be the Construction Law's annual forum, Jan. 24, also in Nashville. The legal technology and consulting services firm Legility — the former Counsel On Call — has acquired Chicago-based Inventus, beefing up its e-discovery offerings and growing its team to more than 500 people in 20 offices across the country and in Europe and Asia, the Nashville Post reports. “This transaction increases our global footprint and expands our capabilities in eDiscovery, as well as in non-litigation domains at the intersection of people, process, and technology,” CEO Barry Dark said in a statement.

Illinois lawyer Jeffrey Wade Deer was disbarred by the Tennessee Supreme Court today after the Supreme Court of Illinois disbarred him on May 21, 2019. In September, the Tennessee court asked Deer to show why reciprocal discipline should not be imposed in Tennessee. Deer did not respond. The court reports that the discipline imposed is identical to that imposed in Illinois.

A bill filed by state Sen. Joey Hensley, R-Hohenwald, and Rep. Bruce Griffey, R-Paris, would change the way the state decides to participate in the federal resettlement of refugees. The new proposal would create a two-step process, Nashville Public Radio reports. First, local governments would have to agree to resettlement. Then the state legislature would consider the issue, with a two-third majority vote required to approve participation. Currently, federal rules rely on the governor of each state to approve statewide resettlements.

A recent break-in at Nashville’s newly constructed Downtown Detention Center could delay the opening planned for this month, Nashville Public Radio reports. The break-in by criminal justice reform advocate Alex Friedmann will require all locks to be replaced at the facility according to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff alleges that Friedmann posed as a construction worker, made diagrams of the jail and stole keys for about 100 of the doors at the facility.

A group of Democratic state attorneys general is challenging a recent 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate to buy health insurance is unconstitutional, NBC reports. The group filed a petition Friday seeking Supreme Court review of the issue. The AGs argue that since Congress reduced the penalty to zero several years ago, there are no longer any constitutional issues with the law. Yesterday, the court asked the parties to respond to the proposed appeal by Friday.

Keeda Haynes, a former Nashville public defender who went to law school after a five-year prison sentence, is the latest Democrat to announce a challenge to U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Nashville, the Nashville Scene reports. Haynes left the public defender’s office, where she had worked since 2013, in December and is now a legal adviser for Free Hearts, a nonprofit organization that provides support to families affected by incarceration. In addition to Haynes, Cooper is facing local activist Justin Jones in the primary, as well as Meredith Mattlin, a Democratic socialist, and Joshua Rawlings, formerly a Republican.
