The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee has announced a new partnership with the Nashville office of the Bradley law firm and Metro Nashville’s Office of Family Safety. Participating Bradley attorneys will accept order of protection cases free of charge in an effort to address the overwhelming need for qualified legal help for low-income residents seeking such orders in Davidson County. Bradley attorneys will be trained to work with victims of trauma by Metro’s Office of Family Safety. The program is expected to launch in early January. Read the full press release here.

The attendance policy at Belmont University College of Law is drawing complaints from pregnant law students, the university's student-run newspaper reports. The Vision interviewed four past and present female law students who claimed the policy discriminates against pregnant women by not allowing them additional absences for hospitalizations or giving birth. The students say they sought help from law school Dean Alberto Gonzales, the university’s former Title IX director and others in the administration, but were not given disability accommodations during pregnancy, even when offering up doctor’s notes, written requests or having, in some cases, life-threatening conditions. Gonzales told the paper the school’s policy was strict, but had never prevented a pregnant student from finishing law school. Read the full article from the Vision.

Legal groups in Knoxville and Nashville will hold Veterans Clinics tomorrow. In Knoxville, the event will run from noon to 2 p.m. at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office. In Nashville, the clinic will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Operation Stand Down Tennessee.

The Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) will hold its 40th Annual Banquet on Jan. 23 at 409 S. Main, an event venue in Memphis' South Main Arts District. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. followed by a program. During the banquet, Megan Lane with Harris Shelton Hanover Walsh will take office as the group’s 2020 president, and Diane Vescovo, chief U.S. magistrate judge for the Western District of Tennessee, will receive the Marion Griffin-Frances Loring Award. New Memphis Bar Association President Lucie K. Brackin with The Landers Firm also will be recognized.

Over the weekend, Metro Nashville police captured Morris Marsh, one of four teens who escaped from the downtown Juvenile Justice Center on Nov. 30. The remaining juvenile at large is Brandon Caruthers, 17, who is facing charges for an armed robbery case that has been transferred to adult court. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation placed Caruthers on its “Most Wanted” list last week. A $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest. The Tennessean has the latest.

With the court’s move to legalize sports betting and Tennessee's decision to pursue it, lawyers need to know how new laws will affect their clients. The "Sports Betting: Tennessee and Beyond" webcast, planned for 10 a.m. CST on Dec. 13, will examine sports betting legislation at the state level and prospects of a federal framework, including a closer look at the Tennessee Sports Gaming Act. The presentation also will look at the emergence of sports betting in mainstream media and culture, and the legal issues related to the ownership and monetization of sports betting data.

The Tennessee Supreme Court last week appointed retired Judge John Damron as special judge to preside over the Coffee County General Sessions and Juvenile Court as needed following Judge Tim Brock’s sudden death in November, the Tullahoma News reports. Damron previously served as a general sessions judge in the 22nd Judicial District, which covers Giles, Lawrence, Maury, and Wayne counties. He will fill the seat until the next election. Five individuals have indicated interest in running for the seat in the March primary. The deadline to file for the election is Dec. 12.

Immigrants seeking asylum at the southern border are being wrongfully deprived of legal counsel, according to a new lawsuit filed by Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center. The suit claims that U.S. officials are denying “all access” to attorneys while applicants go through the initial screening process for asylum in the El Paso sector. The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, both named in the suit, did not respond to requests for comment, Law360.com reports.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday blocked the Trump administration from restarting federal executions after a 16-year break, WREG reports. The justices denied the administration’s plea to undo a lower court ruling in favor of inmates who had been given execution dates starting this week. U.S. Attorney General William Barr announced over the summer that federal executions would resume using a single drug, pentobarbital, to put inmates to death. That plan was challenged for violating the Federal Death Penalty Act by some of the inmates scheduled for execution.
