A group of 50 early voters got ballots with the wrong congressional race on them, the Daily Memphian reports, citing a Shelby County Election Commission announcement. The mix-up was discovered Monday at Berclair Church of Christ where voters who should have received ballots for the 8th Congressional district race received ballots for the 9th Congressional district race instead. Corrected ballots were issued for the rest of that day and throughout the early voting period that ended yesterday. “Out of an abundance of caution, we then conducted another thorough review of all other precincts and no further issues were identified,” Shelby County Elections Administrator Linda Phillips said in an emailed statement to the paper.

News Type: U.S. Supreme Court

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett again today denied an emergency effort to block the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness program, her second such ruling in recent weeks, The Hill reports. Barrett, who handles emergency matters arising from several Midwestern states, acted alone rather than referring the matter to the full court. The brief, one-line order came after a challenge to the program by the libertarian group Pacific Legal Foundation. Barrett's earlier ruling came in a suit from a group of Wisconsin taxpayers seeking to block the plan. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit ruled several weeks ago that the program should be put on hold while challenges play out.

Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti announced today that a settlement with three national pharmaceutical companies — CVS, Walgreens and Walmart — and opioid manufacturer Janssen will provide $84 million to help abate the opioid crisis in Tennessee. The funds now bring Tennessee’s total payout to more than $128 million. That amount includes more than $90 million for the Tennessee Opioid Abatement Trust Fund, which is disbursed throughout the state to address the opioid crisis.
