Will focus on civics education and foreclosure reform, and continue emphasis on access to justice

NASHVILLE, June 1, 2010 — Chattanooga attorney Sam D. Elliott will take office as the Tennessee Bar Association's 128th president this Thursday at the association's annual convention in Nashville. He will be given the oath of office by Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Janice Holder.

Association's youngest president will lead group in 2011-2012

NASHVILLE, June 1, 2010 — Memphis lawyer Danny Van Horn will take office Thursday as president-elect of the Tennessee Bar Association at the association's annual convention in Nashville. The move puts him in line to assume the presidency in June 2011 as the youngest member of the TBA to hold that office.

Dixon, who takes office this week, is in line to lead group in 2012

NASHVILLE, June 1, 2010 — Nashville lawyer Jacqueline B. Dixon will take office as the Tennessee Bar Association's vice president this Thursday at the association's annual convention in Nashville. The move puts her in line to assume the presidency in June 2012.

All four major candidates commit to participate

NASHVILLE, May 27, 2010 — With the governors' race in Tennessee wide open and party primaries set for Aug. 5, the Tennessee Bar Association's Gubernatorial Forum next week is a key opportunity for the candidates to share their positions on issues of concern to the Tennessee legal community. All four major candidates have committed to participate in the event on Friday, June 4, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Nashville. Well-known political observer Pat Nolan will moderate the forum.

Walk-in clinic set for Wednesday, hotline now bilingual

NASHVILLE, May 25, 2010 — A partnership of legal organizations in Tennessee has announced two new legal resources for storm victims: a walk-in legal clinic on May 26 and a legal hotline that can now serve non-English speaking callers.

2010 contest celebrates Law Day and the rule of law

NASHVILLE, May 25, 2010 — Knoxville fifth-grader Chihye Kim of Cedar Bluff Elementary has won first place in a Law Day art contest sponsored by the Tennessee Bar Association, while Matthew Street, a senior at First Assembly Christian School in Cordova, won first place in the TBA's essay contest.

National groups will provide funding for disaster legal services

NASHVILLE, May 20, 2010 — A toll-free legal assistance line for victims of recent storms and flooding, established earlier this month, is now being supported by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (ABA YLD). FEMA and the ABA YLD join a partnership of nine Tennessee legal organizations that launched the hotline on May 6.

National Award Recognizes 4ALL and Celebrate Pro Bono Campaigns

NASHVILLE, May 17, 2010 — The Tennessee Bar Association is being honored with a major national award for helping bring legal services to the poor: the  Harrison Tweed Award, which is given jointly by the American Bar Association and the National Legal Aid and Defenders Association to honor "extraordinary achievements" in increasing access to legal services for the poor.

Partnership between Tennessee legal organizations helps residents

NASHVILLE, May 6, 2010 — A toll-free legal assistance line will be available starting tomorrow at 9 a.m. for victims of recent storms and flooding in counties that have been designated as federal disaster areas. The service, which allows callers to request the assistance of a lawyer, is a partnership between the Tennessee Bar Association, local bar associations and legal organizations in the state.

Bar associations and legal organizations team up to offer help

NASHVILLE, May 4, 2010 — Free legal services to flood victims will be offered at city disaster service centers, as well as several legal clinics, in the coming days through a joint program of the Tennessee Bar Association, the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services, the Nashville Bar Association and the Nashville Pro Bono Program.
