A full slate of activities are scheduled across the state for the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day over the next several days.

On Friday, Vanderbilt University kicks off a weekend full of commemorative events with a luncheon. Events at the university culminate Monday with a keynote address by former U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young and a candlelight vigil.

On Saturday, a youth symposium, teacher training and YWCA Race Against Racism will be held in Knoxville, while the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center in Memphis will celebrate its 33rd anniversary with an event titled “Living the Legacy of Nonviolence.”

On Monday, the following events are planned:

  • Psi Lambda Educational Foundation in Chattanooga will host its first annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Scholarship Breakfast;
  • Christians for Justice and Peace in Crossville will host a program remembering the words delivered by Dr. King at a 1 p.m. event;
  • Dickson County NAACP will hold a banquet at 6:30 p.m. in Dickson;
  • Sumner County NAACP will hold a Unity Day March at noon in Gallatin;
  • The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Commission hosts civil-rights icon and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Cruz Reynoso at a luncheon in Knoxville, while the city plans it to hold its annual parade, tribute service and Night with the Arts;
  • The city of La Vergne will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m.;
  • A unity march and brunch will begin at 10 a.m. in Lebanon;
  • MTSU will host a celebration and candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. in Murfreesboro;
  • Nashville’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. march will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a convocation service at 11 a.m. Three groups will hold candlelight services that night; and
  • The Black History Association will hold a march and program in Springfield at 9 a.m.

On Tuesday, the University of Tennessee College of Law will host a luncheon to celebrate the birthday of King.
