Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Gary Wade's decision to retire creates the chance for Republicans to take a majority on the state’s highest court, says Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville. After Wade announced his decision Friday, Ramsey issued a statement saying, “I look forward to this historic opportunity to give Tennessee its first ever Republican Supreme Court majority.” But several former justices, including Penny White and William Koch, say it is wrong to view the court as a political body and equally wrong to assume a GOP-majority court would rule substantially different than the current court.
