Nashville Mayor David Briley today halted five upcoming public works contracts for capital projects amid questions raised in a recent audit about the department’s close relationship with an engineering contractor, The Tennessean reports. The audit detailed photos showing Brentwood-based Collier Engineering entertaining city officials inside a company suite during sporting events in which the employees did not appear to pay for tickets, violating Metro’s code of ethics on accepting gifts. Briley’s administration further announced plans to hire the city’s first-ever chief compliance officer to review ethics in the city’s procurement process.

Janek John Pawlik of Franklin has filed a civil lawsuit against theater chain AMC Entertainment over claims that its theaters lack appropriate handicap access, The Daily News Journal reports. According to Pawlik’s suit, theater entryways don’t have handicap buttons, which makes it difficult for people who use wheelchairs to enter or exit the building. The lawsuit names AMC locations in Spring Hill, Antioch, Murfreesboro and Nashville. Rebecca Williams of the Southeast ADA Center says that while there are other requirements for door size and weight, lacking power doors is not a violation under the ADA.

The U.S. Supreme Court today ruled in favor of a timber company and other landowners seeking to limit the federal government’s power to designate private land as protected habitat for an endangered species, Reuters reports. In 2012, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decided to include private land where a warty amphibian called the dusky gopher frog does not currently live as a part of a “critical habitat” designation, putting potential restrictions on development opportunities. In the 8-0 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that there are limits on the scope of government authority to make such determinations.

Longtime Nashville news anchor Demetria Kalodimos filed suit last month against the owner of her former employer, WSMV-TV, The Nashville Scene reports. Kalodimos alleged that Meredith Corporation engaged in age discrimination when it fired her in December. This is the second such action taken by former employees of the station; Kalodimos’ suit also alleges that Meredith retaliated against her for being a witness in an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint filed by the plaintiffs of the other lawsuit.

Ten Tennessee lawyers were sworn in today to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. TBA President-elect Sarah Sheppeard was on hand to move the admission of the group, which also included TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson. The group arrived in D.C. yesterday for a reception at the historic Hay-Adams Hotel, and following this morning’s ceremony, enjoyed a tour of the Capitol conducted by staff from Sen. Bob Corker’s office. Those admitted include Laura Smith, Michele Denise Hodges, Nancy Choate, Cynthia Sellers, Laura Williams, Christopher Bellamy, Elaine Michele Youngblood, Laura Yancey Goodall, Wendy Longmire and Berkley E. Schwarz.

The case for the 2019 Tennessee State High School Mock Trial competition was officially released today. This year's problem, a criminal case, involves the murder of a college student and the arrest of the student's best friend, who was accused of the crime. This year’s competition will be held in Nashville on March 22-23, following regional competitions across Tennessee. Chairing the YLD Mock Trial Committee this year is Rob Sands, with Vice Chair Kati Goodner.

Convicted former Pilot Flying J President Mark Hazelwood is fighting an effort by the Knoxville News Sentinel to unseal a transcript of a behind-closed-doors hearing during his trial, a copy of a deal he struck with his former bosses, and notes jurors sent to a judge during deliberations, the newspaper reported on Tuesday. Attorney Richard Hollow last week filed a motion on behalf of the News Sentinel challenging Hazelwood’s bid to keep under seal records in his case involving a closed-door hearing, an employment contract that led Pilot Flying J to fund his defense, and notes jurors sent to U.S. District Judge Curtis L. Collier. The news outlet contends there is no legal basis to keep the records secret.

Mark S. Norris was officially sworn in as new U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Tennessee in a private ceremony on Nov. 8, according to a press release from the court. A public investiture ceremony will be held on Jan. 11. Norris, a former Tennessee State Senator, was nominated to the court by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Oct. 11.

This month the Wilson County Commission voted to select Ensley Hagan to serve as the next Wilson County General Sessions Court judge after Judge John Gwin announced his plans to retire at the end of the year, The Lebanon Democrat reports. Hagan has subbed in on the bench before for Judge Barry Tatum and Judge James H. Flood, and currently serves on the Board of Professional Responsibility. Gwin served as a family court judge for the past 10 years in Wilson County, after starting his career as a family law attorney in 1977.

Memphis attorney Lang Wiseman will serve as deputy to the governor and chief counsel for Governor-elect Bill Lee, The Daily Memphian reports. Wiseman's appointment was announced on Tuesday alongside a number of other senior staff and cabinet positions. Wiseman will be stepping down from his role on the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees to take the job. The founder of Wiseman Bray PLLC, he also currently serves on Gov. Bill Haslam’s Council for Judicial Appointments and is vice chair of the Advisory Commission to the Supreme Court on Rules of Practice and Procedure.
