The Tennessee Supreme Court on Nov. 21 entered an order denying the request of Davidson County lawyer Brian Phillip Manookian for the dissolution of his temporary suspension. Manookian was temporarily suspended from the practice of law on Sept. 21 upon a finding that he poses a threat of substantial harm to the public. On Sept. 28, Manookian filed to dissolve his suspension. Following hearings on Oct. 11 and 19, a panel recommended Manookian's petition be denied. The Supreme Court's order adopted the panel’s recommendation.

The law license of Davidson County lawyer Carla L. Arevalo was transferred to disability inactive status on Nov. 21, pursuant to Section 27.4 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Arevalo cannot practice law while on disability inactive status. On Jan. 11, Arevalo was temporarily suspended by order of the Tennessee Supreme Court, and has not requested nor been granted reinstatement from that suspension.

In addition to the nomination of Glen Casada as new House Speaker, Tennessee House Republicans named a number of other leadership positions for the next session, The Nashville Post reports. Rep. William Lamberth of Cottontown was tapped to succeed Casada as majority leader, while Rep. Bill Dunn of Knoxville was nominated as speaker pro tempore. Rep. Cameron Sexton of Crossville was chosen as caucus chair and Rep. Rick Tillis of Lewisburg was named majority whip.

Chattanooga lawyer Charles Edward “Ed” Lane died Nov. 4 at 76. A U.S. Army veteran, he was commissioned a second lieutenant following his graduation from college and was stationed in Germany from 1964 to 1965. After returning to Chattanooga and working at an insurance company for several years, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1969. Upon graduation he joined Dan Massey in the practice of law. They practiced together until Massey's death, after which Lane continued a solo practice until retiring in 2005.

Longtime National HealthCare Corp. executive John Lines has resigned from his general counsel post after serving with the company since 2006, The Nashville Post reports. Murfreesboro-based NHC, which runs skilled-nursing facilities and home health care programs in 10 states, disclosed Lines’ resignation in a recent regulatory filing but did not elaborate on the reasons.

A Springfield man was sentenced Tuesday to 14 years in federal prison for being the lead conspirer in a $22 million Ponzi scheme that left 17,000 people uninsured, The Nashville Post reports. Bart Posey, who owned American Trade Association and Smart Data Solutions, was also sentenced to three years of supervised release with stipulations and a $200 special assessment fee by U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger.

Two of the three suspects accused in the fatal shooting of Greater Memphis Chamber CEO Phil Trenary waived their rights to a preliminary hearing Tuesday and now their case will be sent to the grand jury for possible indictment on the murder charges, The Daily Memphian reports. Quandarius Richardson, 18, and McKinney Wright Jr., 22, are charged with first-degree murder in Trenary’s slaying. Wright’s cousin, 16-year-old Ranisha Wright, has also been charged in the homicide and she will be in Juvenile Court on Nov. 27 to see if she will be charged as an adult in connection with the slaying of the well-known business and civic leader.

More people are using phone apps to quickly record their interactions with law enforcement, which could be utilized as evidence in cases, WSMV reports. Using shortcuts, individuals can program their phone to begin recording by activating a virtual assistant, such as Siri, and informing it that an interaction with police is commencing.
