The parents of a Blount County man indicted on child porn charges told a federal judge yesterday that they believe their son would be targeted by other inmates and jailers and should be released pending trial, Knoxnews reports. Both parents are retired corrections officers with the Blount County Sheriff’s Office. They asked U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Guyton that their son, George Robert Erhart, be released into their custody.

Lype to Receive the Tennessee Bar Journal's Highest Award

NASHVILLE, June 12, 2018 -- Chattanooga attorney Bob E. Lype will be honored with the Justice Joseph W. Henry Memorial Award for Outstanding Legal Writing at the Tennessee Bar Association's annual Convention, held at The Peabody in Memphis this week.

M. La-Troy Alexandria-Williams, a would-be primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, has been again removed from the ballot after the Tennessee Court of Appeals reversed a Shelby County Chancery Court decision, the Nashville Post reports. The Tennessee Democratic Party removed Alexandria-Williams as a candidate in April, saying he had violated party bylaws, and Alexandria-Williams followed up with a lawsuit. The Chancery Court decision restored him to the ballot, but this week Judge Arthur B. Goldin authored a unanimous opinion saying that decision was incorrect.

A lawsuit has been filed against the Franklin-based parent company of Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. accusing the CEO of discrimination against older employees after he took over last year, the Nashville Post reports. The suit was originally filed last month in Nashville federal court by Bruce Frazer, an employee who was fired last summer. The company has until July 16 to formally respond to the allegations.

State House Rep. Sam Whitson, R-Franklin, has been appointed to the board of the Tennessee Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection, Brentwood Homepage reports. The Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection was established to reimburse claimants for losses caused by dishonest conduct committed by lawyers duly licensed to practice in this state. Members are appointed by the Supreme Court. The staff of the Board of Professional Responsibility serves this group. Whitson is replacing former State Sen. Jim Tracy on the board.

After Chattanooga attorney Bob Lype received the TBA’s Joe Henry Award for legal writing in the Tennessee Bar Journal, the Times Free Press profiled him and his work in dealing with workplace violence. "There's a humanitarian aspect to this," Lype said of the issue of workplace violence. "People are dependent on their jobs." In the article, he recommended steps for companies to protect themselves and their employees.

A grand jury will hear the case of former Memphis City Schools board member Hubon “Dutch” Sandridge, who is accused of sending explicit Facebook messages to a woman he’s never met, The Commercial Appeal reports. General Sessions Court Judge Bill Anderson found in a hearing today that there was probable cause to send the case to the grand jury. The alleged victim testified that Sandridge had been sending messages for months before she discovered them and reported them to police.

U.S. Rep. Diane Black and Bill Lee are the only two candidates for Tennessee governor who support changing the way the state attorney general is selected, The Tennessean reports. The Tennessee Supreme Court currently appoints the position. Black didn’t specify which method of selection she would prefer, but stated that it should be through either direct election or legislative appointment. Lee said he supports a system in which the governor nominates the AG, who is then confirmed by legislators.

The International Academy of Family Lawyers has chosen Marlene Eskind Moses as president-elect, the Nashville Post reports. Formed in 1986, the IAFL is a worldwide association of lawyers seeking to improve the practice of law and administration of justice in matters of divorce and family, according to a release. Moses is the founding manager of local firm MTR Family Law and previously served as president of IAFL’s U.S. chapter.
