U.S. District Court Judge Curtis L. Collier yesterday ordered the unsealing and public release of recordings that captured Pilot Flying J’s former president using racial epithets, Knoxnews reports. Reporters from the USA Today network requested a hearing to release the recordings, made in October 2012 of former President Mark Hazelwood, in January. Hazelwood was convicted of conspiracy, wire fraud and witness tampering in a Chattanooga-based federal court in February.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper claims he was following procedure when he allegedly sexually violated a Campbell County mother during a traffic stop, and says he has no memory of stopping the same woman again three hours later, Knoxnews reports. Trooper Isaiah Lloyd is being sued for violating the rights of Patricia Aileen Wilson during two stops in August 2017. He is accused of putting his fingers inside Wilson’s shorts while searching her. During the second stop, Wilson claims he told her, “we have to stop meeting like this.”

By Order of the Tennessee Supreme Court, the law license of Knox County lawyer Willis B. Jackson Jr. was transferred to disability inactive status today pursuant to Section 27.3 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Jackson is prohibited from practicing law while on disability inactive status. He may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing of clear and convincing evidence that the disability has been removed.

Although she resigned and pleaded guilty to two felony charges, former Nashville Mayor Megan Barry still faces two allegations of ethics violations, The Tennessean reports. The Council Board of Ethical Conduct decided on Wednesday to allow two of four ethics allegations against Barry to continue. Hearings will be held in the coming weeks, and if Barry is found to have formally violated ethics rules, she could be made to pay additional restitution to the city. The complaint also raises the issue of a potential of conflict of interest that occurred due to Barry’s affair with her bodyguard, in regards to her decision-making skills on police matters.

Former Knox County Trustee Mike Lowe was arrested yesterday for falling behind on restitution payments to the county for his admitted thievery, Knoxnews reports. Lowe was behind $13,450 on his payments, causing county Assistant District Attorney General Bill Bright to seek a warrant for probation violation against the former official. Lowe pleaded guilty in March 2015 to a scheme that robbed the county of more than $400,000.

The American Bar Association is accepting applications for its Young Lawyers Division scholarship program, which would help support a qualifying young attorney’s active involvement in the organization. Attorneys who are solo or in a small firm, minorities, in government, in the private sector or are military service attorneys are eligible to apply. Those who receive the scholarship will get partial funding to ABA YLD meetings, appointment to one of the YLD boards or teams, and mentorship for one bar year. Applications must be submitted by April 15.

Attorney General Herbert Slatery said in a new opinion that the state’s constitution does not exempt whiskey barrels from property taxes, the Times Free Press reports. Whiskey producers have been pushing a bill in the legislature that contends "no article, manufactured of the produce of this State shall be taxed otherwise than to pay inspection fees." Slatery’s opinion says whiskey barrels aren’t “manufactured articles” because they aren’t converted into different items.

Mary Alice Carfi, the Wilson County attorney who narrowly lost a special election for the Senate District 17 seat last year, has announced she will try again for the position this year, the Lebanon Democrat reports. The district, which is currently represented by Republican Sen. Mark Pody, includes Cannon, Clay, DeKalb, Macon, Smith and Wilson counties. Carfi, a Democrat, came within 2.6 percent of the vote from defeating Pody in a solidly Republican district in December’s special election.
