YLD to Hold Contested Election for Vice President

This year, the YLD will hold one contested election, which will be for the office of vice president. The vice president will go on to lead the YLD as president in the 2018-2019 bar year. The election will be held via electronic ballot, between March 1 and April 1.

"Empowered by strategic and deliberate planning rooted in the importance of developing strong interpersonal organizational relationships, I feel a calling to bring a more casual, goal-oriented, creative viewpoint to the next four years that will hopefully 1) drive increased TBA membership amongst young lawyers, 2) discover new ways to serve citizens of the state, and 3) bring a camaraderie to the division that will encourage networking and collaboration amongst young lawyers across the state so that we may rise in success in the profession together."
 
Affluent in the dynamics of using strengths-based leadership to influence and inspire, Christian has served the Young Lawyers Division as Mock Trial volunteer in 2012, Mock Trial Committee member in 2013 (writing the entertainment-related copyright infringement problem), vice chair of the Public Service Committee in 2014, and chair of the Public Service Committee in 2015. Throughout this experience, he's continued to excel at the maximization of existing infrastructure and balancing numerous project-based initiatives simultaneously.  
 
In addition to his main practice, Christian is also co-founder and current co-owner of three music industry start-ups: Capri Nashville, an artist management firm representing American Idol's Matt Giraud; Tour Solutions & Agency, a national talent agency for touring musicians; and the Surviving the Music Industry Podcast, which is set to begin nationwide distribution in May 2016. TBA Searching for Mentors for New Attorneys

The TBA Mentoring Program is in search of volunteer mentors to help foster relationships with new attorneys in Tennessee. Mentoring is the most effective way to pass along skills, knowledge and wisdom and it is critical to a new lawyer’s success. Numerous young lawyers are currently signed up as mentees through the program, but there is a shortage of mentors to match them with. 

To qualify as a mentor, you must have a minimum of 8 years experience and have no pending or past investigation or disciplinary action from the BPR.

YLD Names New Officers for 2016-2017 Bar Year

Petitions for YLD officer positions were due on February 15. While the election for Vice President will be contested, the remaining positions were filled via unopposed candidates. Pursuant to the YLD bylaws, individuals who remain unopposed following the deadline for submission of nominating petitions are deemed elected. Joshua Dougan was named the new secretary of the YLD, Troy Weston named East Tennessee Governor and Nina Kumar named Middle Tennessee Governor. Ashley Holliday and Nicole Grida will retain their roles as treasurer and West Tennessee Governor, respectively.
 
In addition, seven district representative positions were up for election, and six were elected without opposition: Amanda Howard will become the new District 2 Representative, Sonia Jennings Boss will be the new District 8 Representative, and Emily Petro, Tessa Lawson, Jamie Durrett and Chasity Sharp Grice will reprise their roles as representatives of Districts 4, 6, 10 and 14. 
 
As no young lawyer filed a petition to become the District 12 Representative, the Executive Committee will make nominations for this seat by March 15. If you are interested in serving as District 12 representative, please contact Rachel Ralston Mancl at rmancl@hsdlaw.com.

YLD Invited Guest News for January 2016

The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as an unfunded and non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association. Hunger and Poverty Relief – The Barristers will be selling “Teddygram” e-cards during the weeks of February 8 - 22.  Every $5 donation will go to purchase teddy bears to donate to the Knoxville Police Department, whose officers provide the bears to children in crisis.
 
Mock Trial - The Mock Trial Committee will hold this year’s Knoxville Bar Association High School Mock Trial Competition on Saturday, February 20, and Saturday, February 27.
 
Solo/Small Firm Panel – Volunteers are also needed for a Solo/Small Firm Panel at UT Law in March. Contact Caitlyn Elam if you’re interested in participating.
 
The Barristers will volunteer for Mobile Meals (the Knoxville chapter of Meals on Wheels) delivering meals to seniors the first Tuesday of every month.  Finally, the Hunger and Poverty Relief Committee thanks each and every person and law firm who participated in the Annual Canned Food Drive and the Angel Tree program. With your help, we raised over $15,000 for Second Harvest and provided Christmas gifts for 21 children in Knoxville. Thank you for your continued support of our efforts.

Coming March 2016: New, Faster YLD Newsletter Format

Beginning in March, the Young Lawyers Division monthly newsletter, E-DICT, will be changing to a faster, more connected format. 
 
There are thousands of TBA members across Tennessee that are young lawyers. Reaching out to those lawyers, and making sure they are aware and informed of YLD events and news, has always been the goal of E-DICT.
 
That’s why we are excited to announce that E-DICT will no longer be published as a monthly newsletter. From here on out, E-DICT will be published as a consistent communication for breaking news. When something is happening, instead of waiting until the end of the month to spread the word, the YLD will publish and distribute that news instantly. 
 
For local bar associations and invited guest groups, which have relied on E-DICT to spread information about their events, nothing will change. Bar leaders can still submit news and events to E-DICT editor Justin Faith, and those items will be included in the new format.
 
This change was made so that young lawyers across the state can stay informed and connected in a more meaningful way. If you have any questions, feel free to contact YLD President Rachel Moses or YLD Publications Committee Chair Justin Faith.

Volunteers Needed for Mock Trial 2016

The TBA Young Lawyers Division Mock Trial committee is still accepting RSVPs for volunteers for this year’s state high school mock trial competition until March 1. The tournament will take place over four rounds on March 18-19, with a final championship round on Saturday evening.
 
Volunteers needed include attorneys for scoring rounds, judges who can serve as presiding judges and law students, paralegals and other legal staff that can serve as bailiffs. Signup now.
 
District competitions are currently underway. Here's a list of district coordinators.
 
Each year the Tennessee Bar Association runs the tournament, which sees the best and brightest students from schools all over the state come to compete. This year’s problem is a civil case that concerns a destroyed horse trailer. Find more information.
