The U.S. Supreme Court officially denied an appeal from gun rights advocates seeking to stop a Trump administration ban on bump stocks, NPR reports. Gun rights groups had filed separate appeals to Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sonia Sotomayor, requesting a temporary hold on the ban. Roberts denied one appeal earlier this week; Sotomayor referred hers to the full court, which denied it today, allowing the ban to proceed while challenges to it move through the courts. The ban requires bump stocks to be destroyed — such as by melting, shredding or crushing — or handed over at an office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

A new federal lawsuit claims a Smyrna city employee hit a workhouse inmate with his van to encourage the man not to "lag behind," the Daily News Journal reports. The lawsuit, filed on March 15, says that Travis Wagner, who is employed by the Smyrna Streets Department, purposefully hit Rutherford County Correctional Work Center inmate Taylor Ross Jacobs with his van. Jacobs is seeking $175,000 from Wagner and $150,000 from the Smyrna Street Department because, according to the lawsuit, it knew of "Travis' abuse towards inmates and continue to let him supervise them."

Gov. Bill Lee's school voucher proposal passed a key hurdle today when it gained approval from the House Education Committee, The Tennessean reports. In an unusual move and a signal of how important the legislation is, House Speaker Glen Casada made an appearance at the meeting to cast a rare vote, moving the educational savings account program forward by a 14-9 margin. Lawmakers amended the proposal, but did not detail those changes before the vote. The amendment includes changes to remove home schooling, cap the program and require the state's education department to verify the legal status of students.

The Department of Children's Services stopped releasing juveniles in detention on weekend home passes after police said a 16-year-old on a temporary release fled from custody and shot a man at a Nashville gas station, The Tennessean reports. Jennifer Nichols, the commissioner of Children’s Services said she was in the midst of "a top to bottom review of previous DCS policy regarding home passes." The abrupt reversal came following 16-year-old David Earl Mays' release on a home pass, despite a history of gun crime arrests and reports of violent behavior while in custody.

Shelby County attorney Martin Alan Weiss was disbarred by the Tennessee Supreme Court on Tuesday. As conditions of his reinstatement, Weiss must make restitution in the amount of $57,769. On Nov. 15, 2018, a petition for discipline was filed against Weiss alleging that he mis-appropriated funds from 18 personal injury settlements. When distributing the money upon settling these clients’ cases, Weiss withheld an amount sufficient to pay what each client owed to the clinic where they had been treated. Rather than paying the money that had been withheld for the clinic, Weiss kept the money for his personal use.
