Tennessee Valley Authority officials were scheduled to meet today with Roane County leaders at its Kingston power plant, a move that attorney Jim Scott, who represents the county leaders, met with trepidation, Knoxnews reports. The elected officials are suing TVA and its contractor, Jacobs Engineering, alleging they knew about the health risks posed to workers hired to clean up the Kingston coal ash spill. “I hope officials at TVA involved in the attempted arrangement of this meeting with Roane County officials have discussed this thoroughly with their attorneys because I have certain issues of concern as their attorney in that action,” Scott said. TVA claims the sit down is a routine meeting with county leaders.

A Nashville jury yesterday found Roy Coons Jr. guilty of strangling and killing 12-year-old Yhoana Arteaga inside her Goodlettsville home, the Tennessean reports. Prosecutors argued for the more severe charge of premeditated first-degree murder, but jurors settled on second-degree. Coons also was found guilty of felony murder, attempted child rape and aggravated criminal trespassing. Assistant District Attorney Pam Anderson said in her closing arguments that while "there are maybes and, yes, there are guesses” involved in the prosecution's theory of what happened that day, there was enough evidence to prove Coons had done it.

The filing blames the loss of Casada's job with Merck pharmaceuticals, a position he claimed he voluntarily resigned from earlier this year amidst the same scandal that led to him stepping down as House Speaker. "Due to his advanced age and the circumstances of his unemployment, it is highly unlikely that Mr. Casada will be able to secure comparable employment," Casada's attorney Sarah Richter Perky wrote in a motion.
