The Tennessee Bar Association is joining with the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), the Tennessee Medical Association (TMA), and other organizations to ask Governor Lee and the legislature to eliminate the Professional Privilege Tax. It should be a right, not a privilege, to run a business in Tennessee.

To help with this effort, the TBA needs more information from you. Please take this short two-minute survey so the TBA can provide real information and statistics to our elected officials about how paying this tax is affecting Tennessee attorneys.

Stuff You Missed in History Class —I absolutely love this podcast.  It is filled with download on weird history, funny history and little known history facts.  It is easy to listen to at work for those days when you just need something entertaining in the background (*cough, cough doc review*).  There are tons of episodes in the archives.  Some of my favs are “Jimmy Winkfield, Derby Pioneer” and for some Tennessee legal history check out “The Scopes Trial.”

How Men Think with Brooks Laich & Gavin DeGraw – I am a HUGE Gavin DeGraw fan so I was hooked as soon as I found out he was a co-host.  This podcast is a panel of men with female guest co-hosts who explore the male perspective on relationships, marriage, children, health and wellness, style … basically everything.  This podcast is hilarious and thought provoking.

TBA YLD President Troy Weston shares a few of his favorite podcasts.

Slate’s Women in Charge — This podcast has introduced me to so many cool women in leadership positions.  Listen to the Sept. 24, 2018 episode interviewing the president of StubHub, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy.

Binge Mode — This is a great podcast for folks with fandoms. So far, they have done Billions, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones.  The podcast dives into the minutiae of the canons. I also listen to several other Harry Potter podcasts (#ravenclaw).

Blamo! — A good podcast on fashion, primarily men’s fashion.

Deep Dish on Global Affairs — This is a good foreign policy podcast. I recommend the Aug. 23 episode called “Sinking Jakarta Is a Test Case for Climate Retreat.”  Some other global affairs podcasts I love are Worldly, The World Next Week, American Diplomat and American Abroad.

What makes a bar association great? You do! So, let’s get together (yeah, yeah, yeah). Join the TBA YLD as we welcome the newest class of admittees to the Tennessee Bar. "I cannot tell you how many cold calls I have referred to attorneys I have met through the TBA YLD or how many times I have picked up the phone just to pick a fellow YLD member's brain about a particular court, judge, or legal topic," YLD Publications Committee Chair Allyson Lumpkin says of YLD networking opportunities. She adds, "none of that would have been possible without building my village of lawyer friends."

The Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division is now accepting applications for the YLD Diversity Leadership Institute Class of 2020! The TBA YLD's Diversity Leadership Institute (DLI) is a six-month leadership and mentoring program for Tennessee law students in their second, third or fourth years of study. The program is designed to:

Develop skills to succeed as a law student and attorney;
Empower students to contribute more to the legal community;
Match students to mentors in a diverse variety of practice areas; and
Build relationships among students of diverse backgrounds.

Class size is limited to 20 students, selected from across the state. The goal of the program is to have a diverse class, so selection is based in part on race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, background, geographical factors and law schools attended.
