We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday!  As we all get organized to approach 2019 with great tenacity and zeal, we thought it would be both interesting and helpful to take a poll on what young lawyers from across the state find to be the most beneficial resolutions or goals for the New Year.  Please cast your vote here

The YMCA Youth in Government conferences feature the Justice Frank Drowota Model Tennessee Supreme Court. We are in need of volunteers to help youth develop arguments, deliberate wisely and determine constitutionality.

We welcome volunteers for 1, 2, or 3 days during our conferences. Each conference runs a similar program with different students from across Tennessee attending each weekend. If you volunteer with us, you will have access to all case materials before the conference.

The Children’s Issues Committee of the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyer’s Division (TBA YLD) is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 CASA Volunteer of the Year Award. Now in its 15th year, the award is designed to recognize the outstanding efforts of a CASA volunteer who goes the extra mile in his or her work with a CASA program in Tennessee.

The winning volunteer and the executive director of his or her local agency will be invited to attend the TBA Mid-Winter Leadership Conference in Nashville and be honored at a Young Lawyers Division dinner on Friday, January 18, 2019. The winner will be presented with a plaque and a cash prize of $150.00 in recognition of his or her service to the community, and will be featured in the Tennessee Bar Journal. The nominating agency also will receive a cash prize of $150.00. Both the winning volunteer and the executive director will be reimbursed for their mileage to Nashville and will be provided overnight accommodations for the night of the event.

Each local agency is eligible to nominate one volunteer and nominations must be received by the end of the business day on December 14. Agencies may re-nominate volunteers who have not won in previous years. Click here for nomination instructions and nomination form.

Finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the hypothetical case for the 2019 Tennessee High School Mock Trial competition has been officially released!  This year’s problem is a nuanced and dramatic criminal case involving the murder of a college student and the arrest of the student’s best friend, who has been accused of the heinous crime.  Regional competitions will take place in February and the regional winners will advance to compete in Nashville on March 22-23.  For more information, please visit the Mock Trial homepage

A well-deserved thank you goes out to the entire TBA YLD Mock Trial Committee, Rob Sands, the Committee Chair and the Vice Chair, Kati Goodner, for the countless hours they dedicated to creating this year’s interesting case problem.  Great work!

This month’s TYL Attorney Spotlight focuses on criminal defense attorney, entrepreneur and world traveler, Matt Brock.  Check out Matt Brock's December 2018 Attorney Spotlight interview.

What's the best gift you've ever received?                                                                                                                        Surprisingly, I have told many people this, the best gift I have ever received was an umbrella given to me by the TBA. I always considered buying one but just could never commit to the idea of it raining again.

How do you relax?                                                                                                                                                                        The best place for me to take my mind off work is the gym but nothing is more relaxing then sitting by a body of water.

What was the most indulgent purchase you’ve ever made?                                                                                                           I bought a nice watch after my third year of practice. I'm still cool with it.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what profession would you be?                                                                                                            I'm an entrepreneur at heart. My first business was mowing yards at 12 years old. But...I've always wanted to ride on the back of a garbage truck, seriously.

What is your favorite place in the world?                                                                                                                                  Three-way tie between Thailand, Mykonos, and Prague.

What’s next on your bucket list?                                                                                                                                                Grow my practice and travel to Japan.

What is your biggest pet peeve?                                                                                                                                              When people aren't on time to leave for the airport. That and lack of spatial awareness.

What fictional character do you most relate to? Why?                                                                                                     Benjamin Button. That was one spry old man.

What are three books that influenced your life?                                                                                                                              3 Chinese Brothers, Rich Dad Poor Dad, Where God Was Born
