As discussed at the full YLD Board meeting on Saturday, the Supreme Court has adopted the Uniform Bar Exam and is currently evaluating whether to require a “local component” in conjunction with or in addition to the UBE. The TBA is currently studying the issue and will be commenting on the same in the near future. John Rice, YLD Public Policy Coordinator, invites all of you to share your comments on this point by June 27, 2018, or to file a comment directly with the Court by July 18, 2018Here is the memo summarizing the issues and proposal. Please forward this information to all Affiliate Reps, Invited Guests and other state organizations to draw their attention to this issue and to solicit their feedback. Also, if any of you know law students, it would be interesting to hear their thoughts, as well.

The 137th Annual TBA Convention took place this past weekend at the famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis. Lots of major events went down at the Convention. Chief Justice Jeff Bivens swore in new TBA president Jason Pannu, gubernatorial candidates vied for attorney support, amazing CLEs were presented, and of course, the most important moment: the TBA YLD's Annual Meeting.  The gathering saw outgoing YLD president Ahsaki Baptist pass the presidential torch to our new leader, Nashville entertainment lawyer, Christian Barker. See all photos from the event.

The new 2018-2019 TBA YLD board members and committees were also introduced.  More on the new TBA YLD board members can be found at the YLD home page

At the event, the YLD also unveiled its new social media platforms.  So, for all the young lawyers across the state (as well as the technologically savvy older lawyers out there), please friendfollow and tweet your TBA YLD pride.

The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as a funded but non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association.  See a list of all organizations invited to send representatives.

In the state budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year, which begins July 1, the Tennessee General Assembly appropriated $9.7 million in additional recurring funding to compensate Tennessee lawyers for representing the indigent under Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 13. On May 25, the Court issued an order soliciting public input on amending Rule 13 to adjust the hourly rates and per-case caps for this work.

The TBA intends to provide comments. To that end, we are soliciting the comments of ALL Tennessee lawyers who do work in this arena. We have prepared this survey to collect your comments.

This year the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will be recognizing its outstanding members each month by featuring them in the TBA YLD Attorney Spotlight. For the month of May, the YLD is highlighting Debbie Zimmerle Boudreaux.

Debbie Z. Boudreaux of The Law Office of David J. McKenzie in Lewisburg, Tennessee focuses her practice in family law. She primarily handles complex divorces, child custody matters, and adoptions.

Boudreaux, born and raised in Chapel Hill, Tennessee, attended Forrest High School before earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2008. Boudreaux was the recipient of the Sam Nailing, Jr. Pre-Law Award and was also awarded a Department of Business Academic Award while at UT Martin. After college, she moved to New Orleans to obtain her law degree from the Loyola University College of Law.

Boudreaux has been very active in her community and in the Bar since entering private practice in 2011. In addition to her private practice, she has served as the Municipal Court Judge for Chapel Hill overseeing traffic offenses and other city ordinance violations since 2013. She is a Member of the American Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association and Young Lawyers Division, Tennessee Municipal Judges Conference, and the Marshall County Bar Association. Boudreaux is currently serving as the District 11 Representative of the Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, where she has spearheaded many successful clinics and other legal programs for first responders, families in need, and other community members. She is looking forward to serving the YLD for the upcoming bar year as the Curriculum Coordinator for the CATALYST program - a program designed to bring the legislative process to high school students throughout the State of Tennessee. She is a tireless advocate for her clients and a great asset to our legal community.

On a personal note, Debbie Boudreaux is married to fellow attorney Ross Boudreaux. Her negotiation skills were strong enough to convince him to take a second bar exam and move from Louisiana to Tennessee to start their life together. They have two children, Jack and Mary, and another baby on the way. They love to travel as often as their practice allows them and both have a borderline unhealthy love for the city of New Orleans. Please join us in congratulating Debbie Z. Boudreaux as this month’s Tennessee Bar Association YLD’s Attorney Spotlight!

Please send nominations for the June 2018 YLD Attorney Spotlight to YLD Publications Chair Justin Faith.

The YLD hosts Wills for Heroes clinics around the state to provide free wills, powers of attorney and advance directives for Tennessee's firefighters, law enforcement officers and other emergency responders. The Wills for Heroes program started shortly after the September 11th terrorist attacks as a way to give back to first responders in need of estate planning services. Since its inception in Tennessee, Wills for Heroes has served several thousand heroes and their families. The YLD had a hugely successful Wills for Heroes Clinic earlier this month in Franklin, Tennessee serving 50 first responders, law enforcement officers, and firefighters.

Stay tuned for more opportunities to volunteer this upcoming bar year.
