We hope everyone is well during these uncertain times.  We regretfully canceled this year’s Tennessee State High School Mock Trial Championships, following the lead from other states and the national competition board. We have also canceled all in-person conferences and continuing legal education programs through mid-May.

Effective March 17, the TBA offices at 221 Fourth Avenue North in Nashville closed, and this closure will remain in effect at least through March 31. All staff will work virtually and will be available through their direct work numbers or through TBA’s main number (615) 383-7421 . They will remain available to assist you, although there may be some delays depending on the nature of the requested assistance.

Please follow TBA’s coverage of updates related to COVID-19 and its effect on our legal system through TBA’s Pandemic Resource Center. Here you can find updated information including the most recent Supreme Court Orders temporarily suspending in-person judicial proceedings and waiving in-person CLE requirements. This site also provides updates on relevant legal community cancelations and postponements across the state. If you have information that you'd like to have added to these pages, please email tbatoday@tnbar.org.

The most recent updates about specific TBA events are available here.

Working from home? Attorney Audrey Calkins, an Associate at the Memphis office of Ogletree Deakins, shares some of her favorite podcasts.

Daily Picks

Up First by NPR.  I listen to Up First every morning while I eat breakfast and drink my coffee.  Up First gets my date started with 15 minutes of news, usually 3-5-minute stories on various topics.

Marketplace Morning Report. After I finish Up First, I listen to Marketplace Morning Report, for obvious reasons right now, for a 10 minute debrief of economic news.

Road Trip Picks

RadioLab.  This podcast is a great production and gives in-depth dives into disparate topics like where and how freshwater eels reproduce (nobody knows!), and whether more humans are alive now than have ever died in history (or vice versa), the history of square dancing, and who can run 50 miles faster: a horse or a person. Episodes are about 30-60 minutes.

Ask Me Another. Puzzles, wordgames, and trivia!  Need I say more?  Episodes are about 1 hour and very mentally engaging.

To listen to while I clean

LeVar Burton Reads. Yes, that LeVar Burton aka Mr. Reading Rainbow and Star Trek. He reads 30-60-minute short fiction stories (I mostly listen to the sci fi/dystopian future ones), and he starts every episode by asking the listeners to take a deep breath along with him, which is a great reminder right now.

To relax and stretch

The Open Ears Project. Each episode of this 30 podcast series features one piece of classical music curated by Clemency Burton-Hill, who wrote Year of Wonder (one piece of classical music a day for a calendar year).

Volunteer Breakfast Needs Sponsors & Volunteers – The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast is a recurring event on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:15 a.m. The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast Committee always needs volunteers to serve food or sponsor. Please sign up online or contact Matt Knable or Mitchell Panter for more information.
