“The Case Against 8,” the HBO documentary about the legal challenge brought by Ted Olson and David Boies to end California’s ban on same-sex marriage premiered in Tennessee yesterday at the Green Hills Cinema in Nashville. The documentary is a behind-the-scenes look inside the historic case to overturn Proposition 8, and follows the plaintiffs, two gay couples thrust into the national spotlight as spokespeople for the cause.

The 3rd Annual “SOLO Time at Bristol” autocross competition will be held at the Bristol Motor Speedway May 3. More than 100 competitors are expected. They will drive a timed precision course on a flat track. All proceeds benefit Speedway Children’s Charities and Legal Aid of East Tennessee. Learn more about the event.

Both Democrats running to replace General Sessions Court Judge Gloria Dumas vowed to be on time and restore confidence in a courtroom marred by Dumas' alleged tardiness and absenteeism, the Tennessean reports. Former prosecutor Allegra Walker and private attorney Vince Wyatt are vying for the eight-year term with a salary of $165,204, overseeing one division in a court that receives the highest volume of cases in the county. The Division IV court also includes special duties hearing domestic violence cases.

Attorneys for Judge Joe Brown filed a motion to stay a May 2 hearing in a contempt of court charge, pending an appeal, WREG reports. The appeal was filed at the same time as the motion asking for the delay.

Shelby County Election Commissioners certified the ballot Wednesday for the Aug. 7 state and federal primary elections and the nonpartisan judicial and Shelby County Schools board elections on what politicos call the “big ballot.” Election Commission turnout figures show 267 citizens voted early at Election Commission headquarters on the first day. Satellite early voting locations across Shelby County open April 25.The Memphis Daily News has more.

Under the new “Child Protection Act,” a person accused of sexually abusing a child multiple times will receive a single trial, allowing a victimized child to testify only once in court. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Vince Dean, R-East Ridge, and Sen. Ken Yager, R-Harriman. Rep. Dean told the Chattanoogan he has been working on the bill for nearly three years alongside the District Attorney’s Conference and the Tennessee Bar Association. The bill cleared both the House and Senate with a unanimous vote and is now on its way to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.

A zoning dispute over a Franklin County Drug Court use escalated into two lawsuits against the City of Decherd and two municipal employees on grounds they didn’t have the authority to terminate water services to force tenants to vacate. The Herald Chronicle has the story.

Tennessee Attorney General Robert Cooper has moved to block subpoenas issued as part of a hearing into the failed union vote at Volkswagen. Cooper also filed to postpone the hearing, which was scheduled to start Monday in Chattanooga. The United Auto Workers wants Governor Bill Haslam, his Economic Development Commissioner and several lawmakers to testify in order to prove there was a coordinated effort to undermine unionization, Nashville Public Radio reports.

Chattanooga attorney Max Bahner will receive the 2014 Outstanding Service Award at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s annual Legends and Leaders Banquet on April 25. Bahner is senior member of the litigation section of Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel and is a Founding Fellow and past president of the Chattanooga Bar Association and a Founding Fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation.
