SAM DELK KENNEDY, publisher of The Columbia Daily Herald and former judge, died May 1. He was 91. A native of Maury County, Kennedy served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army before attending Cumberland School of Law in Lebanon. After graduation, he entered private practice in Columbia, and he later served as general sessions judge and district attorney for the 14th Judicial District. In 1965, he became the publisher of The Daily Herald, a role he held until 1983.

R. DAVID ALLEN of Lebanon died on Feb. 23. He was 89. Born in New York City, Allen was a U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force veteran who graduated from the Nashville School of Law in 1962. He started his career as the industrial relations manager for TRW’s Ross Gear Division plant, but soon moved on to become assistant district attorney general for the state of Tennessee in 1967. He worked in private practice in Lebanon until his retirement.

Fourth Estate Award Nomination Deadline Extended

April 10, 2018

The deadline for nominations for the TBA’s first-ever Fourth Estate Award has been extended to May 10. The award was created to honor courageous journalism that enhances public understanding of the legal system and the law. Nominations will be accepted for work published from Jan. 1, 2017 until the present.

Fourth Estate Award Created to Honor Journalists

The Tennessee Bar Association is now accepting nominations for consideration for its first Fourth Estate Award, created to honor “courageous journalism that enhances public understanding of the legal system and the law.”

The winner will be a journalist or journalists from newspapers, TV, radio, digital media, book publishing or social media who have shown courage in exercising First Amendment rights in the promotion of public understanding of how the law and our legal system work.

E-FILING AVAILABLE FOR WORKERS’ COMP CASES

The Tennessee Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) has moved workers' compensation cases online, in a new system that allows attorneys and self-represented litigants to file documents without printing copies or traveling to BWC offices across the state.

The new “TNComp” electronic filing system allows all parties to file contested case pleadings in a more efficient and cost-effective manner. BWC modeled TNComp after the PACER platform used by the federal court system, but tailored it for Tennessee.

Sellers to Lead TBA in 2020

Jackson attorney Michelle Greenway Sellers of Rainey, Kizer, Reviere & Bell PLC will take the office of Tennessee Bar Association President in 2020, according to election-qualifying results. No other candidate qualified for the vice president position by the Feb. 15 deadline. Sellers, a former YLD president and graduate of the TBA Leadership Law program, currently serves as 7th District Governor on the TBA Board.
