The next legal clinic for veterans in Knoxville will take place April 8 from noon to 1 p.m. EDT at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. This is a general advice clinic sponsored by the Knoxville Bar Association, KBA Barristers, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, the University of Tennessee Winston College of Law, the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office and the local Veterans Affairs office. Attorneys and law students are needed for the in-person clinic. Attorneys also may help clients by phone. Sign up to volunteer.

The Belmont Legal Aid Society will hold its Fourth Annual Putt for Pro Bono Golf Tournament on April 3 at the Towhee Golf Club — an Arnold Palmer-designed course — in Spring Hill. This event directly funds stipends that allow law students to provide pro bono legal work to Tennessee communities.The registration price will be $140 per golfer. Interested individuals can register as a team with up to four members. Individual registrants will be placed in a team of four. Check-in on the day of the tournament will start at 8 a.m. CDT and the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CDT. Lunch and awards will follow. Make plans now to join colleagues for a day of golf and camaraderie while raising funds to provide critical legal services to those in need. The TBA Access to Justice Committee is accepting nominations for the 2026 Public Service Awards. The annual awards recognize outstanding commitment to access to justice in three categories: work performed by an attorney employed by an organization primarily involved in providing legal representation to the indigent, pro bono work performed by a private or corporate attorney, and a strong commitment to pro bono service by a Tennessee law student or recent graduate. Nominations and supporting documents will be accepted through April 17. Awards will be presented during the TBA Annual Convention in June.

The TBA Pro Bono Portal provides a centralized source for lawyers and law students to find pro bono opportunities across Tennessee, like the following case through West Tennessee Legal Services (WTLS). A client is seeking a conservatorship for their adult disabled daughter. WTLS has an updated physician affidavit on file. Get more information about the requirements associated with this opportunity or browse other pro bono needs. A free half hour CLE is available on the TBA’s website to introduce attorneys to this innovative platform. The webcast includes a live demonstration of the portal and shows attorneys how to search and sign up for pro bono opportunities in their practice areas.

The Knoxville Bar Association and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET), will hold a Debt Relief Clinic on March 28 to provide pro bono legal services to income-eligible consumer debtors. The clinic will begin at 9 a.m. EDT at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. Judge Suzanne Bauknight will present a short overview of the bankruptcy system and then volunteer lawyers will conduct initial meetings with the clients to discuss their situations and options. Volunteers are needed for an expungement clinic on March 14 from 9 a.m. to noon CDT at Greenhouse Ministries located at 307 Academy St., Murfreesboro 37130. The TBA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) will be collaborating with Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands to hold the event. Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts will host its "Legal Clinic for the Arts" from 6-8 p.m. CST Feb. 24 after the event was postponed due to the recent winter storm. The clinic will take place at Belmont University College of Law’s Randall and Sadie Baskin Center, 1901 15th Ave. S., in Nashville. It will provide one-on-one legal consultations for income-qualified Tennessee artists, emerging arts nonprofits and creative businesses, focusing on arts-related issues. Participants can register for a 30-minute, in-person private session and will be contacted to confirm appointment details. The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) announced it will offer free legal advice for veterans through clinics held throughout the year. The first clinic will take place Feb. 11 from noon to 2 p.m. EST at the Knox County Public Defender’s Office, WVLT reports. The clinics will provide legal advice, but wills will not be drafted. Veterans unable to attend in person may use a telephone clinic option and can preregister by calling Legal Aid of East Tennessee at 865-637-0484. Additional clinics are scheduled for April 8, June 10, Aug. 12, Oct. 14 and Dec. 9. Learn more from the KBA.
