A Nashville attorney will seek the Republican nomination for the state House seat currently occupied by Speaker Beth Harwell, the Nashville Post reports. Joseph Williams is the second Republican to toss his hat into the ring after Harwell announced she would run for governor instead of reelection. Also in the race is a physician, Brent Moody, who will face Williams in the primary. Democrat Bob Freeman is considering a bid for the position as well.

Former Republican U.S. Rep. Stephen Fincher has formally announced his intentions to run for the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by Sen. Bob Corker in 2018, The Tennessean reports. Fincher, from Frog Jump, represented Tennessee’s 8th Congressional District from 2011 to 2017. He will seek the Republican nomination for the position, for which he will have to go head-to-head with current Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn, who already announced her plans to run. On the Democratic side, attorney James Mackler could potentially face off against Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke or former Gov. Phil Bredesen, who both are considering a bid.

East Tennessee State University professor and medical practitioner Martin Olsen has formally announced his bid for the Tennessee 1st District U.S. House seat, the Johnson City Press reports. Olsen, who first indicated his interest in the seat back in August, will run as a Democrat and challenge Rep. Phil Roe for the seat. He said he plans on running on a platform of responsible change, as well as jobs, education and health care.

Former U.S. Congressman Stephen Fincher said yesterday that he is “very close” to entering the race to replace U.S. Senator Bob Corker, who announced he would not seek reelection earlier this year, the Memphis Daily News reports. Fincher, a Republican, said he believes voters want Republicans who will “stand up with President Trump, who is right on all of the policy.” He said he will formally announce his decision later this week. U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn has already announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination, while attorney James Mackler and, potentially, Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke and former Gov. Phil Bredesen, will run on the Democratic side.

Jesse Nelson, a Knox County attorney, has announced he will seek the Republican nomination for state House District 89. Current Rep. Roger Kane previously announced he would run for Knox County Clerk. In a release from his campaign, Nelson touted his experience in starting his own law firm, his conservative beliefs, and his previous work on political campaigns as his qualifications.

U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais announced his bid for reelection today, the Times Free Press reports. DesJarlais, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee and is a member of the House Freedom Caucus, was first elected in 2010. He will face U.S. Navy veteran Jack Maddux in the Republican primary. DesJarlais narrowly defended a primary challenger in 2014, after a scandal broke in which the pro-life congressman was found to have encouraged both his ex-wife and a mistress to get abortions. Last year he defeated Grant Starrett in the Republican primary as well as Democratic challenger Steven Reynolds. Reynolds is running again this year for the Democratic nomination against Murfreesboro teacher Mariah Phillips.

State Rep. Sherry Jones (D-Nashville), has announced she will run for Davidson County Juvenile Court Clerk next year, The Tennessean reports. She will face former Metro Nashville Councilman and current director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhoods, Lonnell Matthews Jr., in the May primary election. Jones and Matthews jumped in the race after current Clerk David Smith announced his retirement earlier this year. Jones has served in the House since 1994.

Former Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen has confirmed his interest in seeking the open U.S. Senate seat that will be up for grabs in 2018, the Associated Press reports. Current Sen. Bob Corker announced his retirement earlier this fall, igniting a firestorm of interest and speculation over potential successors. “In the days ahead, I’m going to do some research, talk with people and carefully think this through,” Bredesen said. “I’ll make a decision quickly.” Bredesen, a Democrat, would have attorney James Mackler and potentially Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke to contend with in a primary. In the general election, U.S. House Rep. Marsha Blackburn has already announced her plans to run for the Republican nomination.

U.S. Rep. Diane Black could soon step down from her seat in the House of Representatives, the Nashville Post reports. Black fueled speculation today when her campaign tweeted a report that said she would step down from her chairmanship of the House Budget committee. The report said Black would not answer whether she would remain in the seat or resign to focus on her gubernatorial campaign.

After U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn announced her planned bid for U.S. Senate, state Sen. Mark Green said that he will run for Congress to replace her, The Tennessean reports. The news is a reversal from Green’s previous decision not to seek any higher office this cycle. Green was previously under consideration to become President Donald Trump’s Army secretary, but withdrew after comments he made about Muslims and LGBT individuals surfaced.
