Tennessee House Rep. Harold Love Jr. announced today his run for mayor of Nashville, The Tennessean reports. Love, a Democrat, has served in the House since 2012, representing District 58. Love has also qualified to run for reelection for his current position. Both elections are expected to take place on Aug. 2, pending a Tennessee Supreme Court ruling on the mayoral vote. The Nashville Post has a list of all 11 candidates vying for the position.

The Nashville Bar Association today released the results of a member poll for candidates running in the 2018 primary election in Davidson County. Anne Martin was most highly recommended in the Chancery II race, Judge Angelita Blackshear Dalton was the pick for Criminal Court Division II, Ana Escobar was first in the General Sessions Division III race, while Frank Mondelli Sr. narrowly topped the weighted average for the General Sessions Division X post. The poll also surveyed NBA members on the clerk races, with Howard Gentry the favorite for Criminal Court Clerk and Lonnell Matthews Jr. topping the race for Juvenile Court Clerk. The Davidson County primary will be held on May 1.

Two candidates will vie for the General Sessions Judge Division II position in Sumner County on the May 1 ballot, The Tennessean reports. Deborah Frizzell, a Hendersonville attorney, and Judge David R. Howard, the interim holder of the seat on the bench, have both qualified to run. Howard was appointed in January after the retirement of Judge Barry Brown.

The deadline to qualify to appear on the Aug. 2 primary ballot for November's general election is coming up on April 5. Candidates wishing to run for office this year should see their local county election commission office to pick up a petition and gather the required 25 signatures prior to the deadline.

Dennis Clark, chief executive officer of a brand strategy firm and a financial services group, is seeking the Tennessee House District 28 seat, the Times Free Press reports. The Chattanooga-area legislative seat will be open, following the retirement of Rep. JoAnne Favors. Clark is one of six declared candidates for the position; others include Jackie Anderson Thomas, Yusuf Hakeem, Melody Shekari and Brandon Woodruff in the Democratic primary, as well as Republican Lemon C. Williams Jr.

Two campaign finance ethics complaints against gubernatorial candidate U.S. Rep. Diane Black were dropped today, The Tennessean reports. The Registry of Election Finance voted unanimously to dismiss the complaints, as well as to delay taking up three complaints against House Speaker Beth Harwell and her campaign for governor.

Republican Shane Reeves has won the special election for Tennessee Senate in District 14, the Nashville Post reports. Reeves, a Murfreesboro businessman, scored 72 percent of the vote over Democrat Gayle Jordan. The seat was left open when former Sen. Jim Tracy departed for an appointment at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The district includes parts of Rutherford County, as well as Bedford, Marshall, Moore and Lincoln counties.

Former Rutherford County prosecutor Nathan Nichols announced he will seek the position of Circuit Court Judge in the May primary, the Murfreesboro Post reports. Nichols is seeking the Republican Party nomination in the primary for the post, which serves Rutherford and Cannon counties.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Lee has resigned from the board of the Nashville Business Coalition after the group publicly urged Democrat David Briley to seek election as Nashville mayor and called on other prospective candidates to stay out of the race, the Tennessee Star reports. Lee said he didn't think leadership groups should discourage others from entering the political process.

Mary Alice Carfi, the Wilson County attorney who narrowly lost a special election for the Senate District 17 seat last year, has announced she will try again for the position this year, the Lebanon Democrat reports. The district, which is currently represented by Republican Sen. Mark Pody, includes Cannon, Clay, DeKalb, Macon, Smith and Wilson counties. Carfi, a Democrat, came within 2.6 percent of the vote from defeating Pody in a solidly Republican district in December’s special election.
