TBA Accepting Applications for Executive Director

The Tennessee Bar Association is now accepting applications from candidates interested in the position of Executive Director. This full-time position is responsible for directing the planning, organization, staffing, financial administration, and implementation of TBA programs and activities.  Serves as advocate for the legal profession and represents the Association with various legislative and judicial entities. Job Title:  Executive Director
Reports To:  Board of Governors
Supervises:  Assistant Executive Director, Director of Finance, Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs, Human Resource/Admin Manager, Executive Assistant
FLSA Status:  Exempt

I.  Summary:  Directs planning, organization, staffing, financial administration, and implementation of TBA programs and activities.  Serves as advocate for the legal profession and represents the Association with various legislative and judicial entities.

II.  Essential Job Duties 

A.  Directs Planning of Association Activities and Development of TBA Policies

  1. Directs short-term and long-term planning; defines Association mission and objectives with input of staff; obtains approval of Board of Governors.
  2. Plans, formulates and recommends for the approval of the Board of Governors the programs and policies which will further the objectives of the Association.
  3. Develops, for purpose of day-to-day administration, specific policies, procedures, and programs to implement the general policies established by the Board of Governors.

B.  Directs Implementation of TBA Programs

  1. Ensures effective evaluation of member needs.
  2. Establishes a sound organizational structure for the headquarters office and ensures coordination of activities among staff.
  3. Oversees development of educational programs to advance the professional skills of the membership, operating within budget and program objectives approved by the Board of Governors.
  4. Oversees development of membership promotion and retention programs; evaluates results and recommends policies, procedures, and programs to achieve membership goals.
  5. Oversees timely collection of dues and termination of delinquent members.
  6. Oversees staff support of section and committee meetings and activities.
  7. Oversees evaluation of responsiveness of TBA to member needs; directs changes as appropriate.

C.   Represents the Association Before Legislative and Judicial Entities

  1. Monitors local, state, and federal legislation, alerting appropriate committees, sections, and entities to proposals affecting the practice of law, legal profession, and substantive law areas.
  2. Monitors local, state, and federal court and related boards, commissions and entities relative to rules, procedures, and caseloads alerting appropriate committees and entities to developments.
  3. As approved by the Board and in conjunction with officers represents the association before U.S. Congress, Tennessee General Assembly, Tennessee Supreme Court, U.S. courts and all other courts, entities and bodies.

D.  Oversees Management of TBA Human Resources

  1. Recommends human resource policies and procedures.
  2. Interviews job candidates and makes hiring recommendations.
  3. Ensures efficient and coordinated use of staff.
  4. Oversees training and development of staff; coaches subordinates and employees.
  5. Evaluates performance of subordinates and oversees evaluation of staff.
  6. Disciplines staff if needed, including termination of employees if necessary.
  7. Manages employee compensation in conjunction within guidelines set by Board of Governors.

E.  Oversees Financial Administration

  1. Executes such contracts and commitments as may be authorized by established policies or by the Board of Governors; delegates and approves execution of contracts as authorized.
  2. In cooperation with the Finance Committee and Treasurer, develops, recommends and, upon approval, operates within an annual budget.  Ensures that all funds, physical assets, and other property of the Association are appropriately safeguarded and administered.
  3. Maintains official minutes of Board of Governors and other official meetings of the organization, provides security for all files, legal and historic documents, membership and mailing lists.

F.  Oversees Member Communications

  1. Ensures that interest in and active participation in the association’s activities on the part of the membership are promoted through the communications media of the association; ensures that activities of the Board and the association are reported to members.
  2. Oversees responsive and value added communication to Association members to ensure they have access to the most current and accurate information related the legal profession and various specialties.
  3. Serves as executive editor of the Tennessee Bar Journal.

G.   Directs Public Relations

  1. Plans, coordinates, and conducts a public relations program to enhance public acceptance of the legal profession.
  2. Maintains effective relationships with other organizations, both public and private, and sees that the position of the association and its members is enhanced in accordance with the policies and objectives of the organization.

H.   Administers Tennessee Legal Community Foundation

  1. Directs fundraising and administration of foundation to support law related education programs, building operation, and youth court program.
  2. Directs development and implementation of capital campaigns and other fundraising programs or events.
  3. Ensures proper control and disbursement of foundation funds.

I.   Administers TBA Member Insurance Solutions

  1. Manages relationship with TBA and its insurance partner related to members services, TBA commissions, marketing and related agreements.
  2. Manages operations of the TBAMS board and other duties as assigned.
  3. Ensures proper control and accounting of TBAMS funds in consultation with the TBA Director of Finance and Accounting
  4. Oversees marketing and other communications from TBAMS in consultation with the TBA Director of Membership.

III.  Other Job Duties

Performs other job duties as assigned, including:

  1. Researches topics of interest to association members and develops reports for Board of Governors and association members.
  2. Oversees facilities management and strategic technology development and deployment.
  3. Participates in industry professional associations.
  4. Participates in industry professional associations, including but not limited to participation in meetings of the American Bar Association, the National Association of Bar Executives, and the National and Southern Conferences of Bar Presidents
  5. Performs related duties as required.

VI.  Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The incumbent works in an office environment.  Frequent overnight travel is required. 

VII.  Qualifications

Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a law degree and a minimum of eight years of legal experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
