The Trump administration believes that immigration advocacy groups should bear responsibility for finding parents who were separated from their children and deported, USA Today reports. A court document filed yesterday by the Department of Justice says that the government would turn over whatever identifying information it could on the parents who were deported, but that the ACLU should work to find the parents from there. ACLU attorneys argue the administration is shirking its duties, and claim that the information shared on the deported parents is often incomplete.

Across the state, several seats in the Tennessee Senate were secured by party nominees with no contender in November. Notable highlights include Katrina Robinson, who defeated incumbent Democrat Reginald Tate in the District 33 Senate race, current state Rep. Raumesh Akbari’s win for Senate District 29, and Rep. Brenda Gilmore’s victory in Senate District 19. In other state Senate news, outgoing Sen. Lee Harris, a Memphis attorney, was elected mayor of Shelby County.

Former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean and Franklin businessman Bill Lee have secured the Democratic and Republican nominations for Tennessee governor, respectively, the Nashville Scene reports. Lee defeated Rep. Diane Black, businessman Randy Boyd and Speaker Beth Harwell, while Dean bested House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh by a significant margin. In Tennessee’s other major statewide race, the contest to replace U.S. Senator Bob Corker, Democrat Phil Bredesen and Republican Marsha Blackburn easily won their primaries to secure their party nominations.

The American Bar Association’s House of Delegates will meet on Monday and Tuesday to consider a number of new resolutions, the ABA Journal reports. While the final slate will not be determined until Sunday afternoon, some of the issues that might be voted on include a resolution to amend the ABA’s dues structure and a resolution to eliminate the requirement that law schools use a “valid and reliable admission test” as a part of the application process.

Rutherford County commissioners are moving ahead with a planned $3 million renovation of the former judicial building and sell an old annex and coin building connected to it on the public square, the Murfreesboro Post reports. The commission’s property management committee voted Thursday to allow the Public Building Authority to handle the refurbishing project. The buildings have been vacant since May when the $74 million Rutherford County Judicial Complex opened two blocks north.

Shelby County Chief Public Defender Stephen Bush has announced he will retire this year, The Commercial Appeal reports. Bush has been with the office for 27 years and was appointed to lead it in 2010. Bush notified county Mayor Mark Luttrell of his retirement in January, but plans to remain in place as the county transitions under the new county mayor.

The Tennessee Child Support Guidelines are being updated in order to comply with federal law changes, and the state Department of Human Service Child Support Program is currently soliciting feedback from across the state. Those interested in providing feedback should review the redlined copy of the proposed changes and complete a survey by Aug. 17.

After having his voting rights restored recently, ex-felon Kontar Macklin is educating others in Memphis on felony voter disenfranchisement, The Commercial Appeal reports. It took two attempts but Macklin was able to restore his voting rights this year in time to vote in the May primary elections. Now he is trying to reach out to members of his community to help them through the process of having their own rights restored.

Convicted former Pilot Flying J president Mark Hazelwood is seeking a delay in his sentencing, Knoxnews reports. Hazelwood’s representation claim that the $23 million in fraud attributed to Hazelwood is an inflated number, and must be recalculated before he can be sentenced. Hazelwood was convicted alongside other former employees of scheming to rip off smaller trucking companies.
