Cyntoia Brown, the Nashville woman who is serving life in prison for a murder committed when she was 16, has a new court date to challenge her sentence after national attention was brought to her case by celebrities and activists. The Tennessean reports that the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati will hear oral arguments on June 14 from attorneys who say her sentence was unconstitutional. Brown was first jailed in 2004 after her conviction of shooting a 43-year-old man who picked her up. Advocates say Brown was a victim of sex trafficking and during the incident she feared for her life.

Roy Moore, the Alabama Senate candidate who was accused of pursuing inappropriate relationships with underage girls, has filed a lawsuit against four of his accusers, the ABA Journal reports. The suit claims the women defamed him and conspired to ruin his campaign. One accuser, Leigh Corfman, released a statement standing by her claims that Moore pursued her when she was 14 years old.

Three open positions will be filled by the Tennessee Bar Association Board of Governors at its meeting on June 16. In accordance with Article 47 of the TBA Bylaws, the board may fill the vacancies, with terms through Spring 2019, at its June 2018 meeting. The fourth, seventh and eighth district governor seats are all open. By Order of the Tennessee Supreme Court entered today, the law license of Washington County lawyer Ivan Monroe Lilly was transferred to disability inactive status, pursuant to Section 27.3 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Lilly cannot practice law while on disability inactive status. He may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing of clear and convincing evidence that the disability has been removed and he is fit to resume the practice of law.

The court is considering an amendment to Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 10, Canon 2, Rule of Judicial Conduct 2.9, Comment 4, to support the assistance provided to individuals through therapeutic and problem-solving courts. The court now seeks written comments from the bench, the bar and the public. The deadline for submitting written comments is May 30. The number of criminal offenses motivated by a known bias increased 10.5 percent last year, according to data recently released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations. The Tennessean reports that the TBI received reports of 199 hate crimes last year, up from 180 in 2016. Of those crimes, racial, ethnicity and ancestry bias was the most frequently reported motivation, accounting for 56.8 percent of the reports. Assault offenses were the most frequently reported, followed by intimidation.

Former state Rep. Barrett Rich and former Tennessee Department of Safety head Denny King have been nominated by President Donald Trump to become U.S. Marshals, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Rich, nominated for the West Tennessee position, retired from the legislature in 2014 and was then appointed to the Tennessee state Board of Paroles. King previously served as U.S. Marshal for Middle Tennessee under appointment from President George W. Bush.
