Amidst multiple allegations and charges against current Sheriff Eric Watson, the chief of the Criminal Investigations Division at the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, Capt. Steve Lawson, has resigned and picked up papers to challenge Watson in the next election. The Times Free Press reports that Lawson said he “can no longer respect or believe the person I work for.” Watson, who faces trial on Jan. 22 for 12 felony counts of having or using forged auto titles, has announced he would seek reelection.

The Association for Women Attorneys in Memphis has announced its officers for the new year. Eileen Kuo will serve as president, with Laura Deakins as president-elect. Megan E. Warden was elected vice president, Anita Lotz elected treasurer, and Taylor Oyaas elected secretary. Diana Comes will serve as immediate past president.

Ryan Levy has been named new managing shareholder at Patterson IP Law, the Nashville Post reports. He replaced Ed Lanquist in the role. Levy has been with the firm since 2005, and serves as co-chair of Patterson’s Litigation Practice Group. Lanquist praised the choice of Levy and noted that the ascension was part of a transition plan that began two years prior.

The former campaign chair for President Donald Trump’s White House bid is suing Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein over the Russia investigation, Fox News reports. Paul Manafort, who pleaded not guilty to a 12-count indictment in October, is alleging that Mueller’s probe has gone beyond the scope of special counsel regulations. He also claims he has been “injured” by the investigation, which caused him “significant reputational harm.”

After a satellite location in the area proved to be a success, groups in a Chattanooga suburb are partnering to support the local Family Justice Center, an organization devoted to supporting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, the Times Free Press reports. In July 2016 the Family Justice Center and the White Oak Methodist Church joined to launch a satellite branch of the center in Red Bank to support families that couldn’t make the trip to the organization’s main location in Chattanooga. This year for the holidays, the Red Bank branch expanded services to offer basic essentials like clothing and personal hygiene items. The new effort was funded by a charity auction run by the Red Bank Chamber Council.

Nashville could soon see tougher rules governing AirBnB rentals, thanks to a bill that passed second reading last night at the Metro Council meeting, The Tennessean reports. The bill strengthens caps on non-owner-occupied rentals allowed in suburban parts of Davidson County and creates a new “anti-clustering” rule to prevent concentration. The third and final reading will take place on Jan. 16, when the council will also consider whether to ban non-owner occupied short-term rentals in residential areas outright.

The Nashville Metro Council yesterday voted to appoint Nick Leonardo, a fellow councilman and attorney, to the General Sessions bench, The Tennessean reports. The council voted 21-16 in favor of Leonardo over Assistant District Attorney Ana Escobar, who was the favored candidate in a poll of Nashville Bar Association members. This was the second time recently that the Metro Council appointed one of their own to the bench; Sam Coleman was selected to replace former General Sessions Judge Casey Moreland last May.

A couple has filed suit against the Knox County Sheriff’s Office over the fatal shooting of a family dog, Knoxnews reports. The couple, Kenny and Tina Bailey, say an accidental call was made to 911, resulting in Sheriff’s deputies arriving at the Bailey’s home. The lawsuit claims the officers attempted to lure out one of the family dogs, and later shot one of them. KCSO has not released an official response, per its policy, but officers captured on body camera video are heard saying the home had a history of domestic disturbance calls.

Riverbend Maximum Security Institution lost heat yesterday amid extremely cold temperatures and crews worked overnight to keep inmates and employees warm, the Associated Press reports. The heat loss was caused by a boiler going offline. The staff has not provided a timeline for its return. Riverbend, located in Nashville, houses 787 inmates, including all of the state’s male death row offenders.

State House Rep. John Forgety, R-Athens, has announced he will retire from the Tennessee General Assembly after the completion of his fourth term this year, Humphrey on the Hill reports. Forgety, a former teacher and veteran, currently serves as chair of the House Education Instructions and Program Committee. Forgety represents House District 23, which covers all of McMinn and parts of Monroe counties.
