TThe law license of Hawkins County attorney Renfro Blackburn Baird III on Monday was transferred to disability inactive status pursuant to Section 27.3 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Baird cannot practice law while on disability inactive status. He may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing of clear and convincing evidence that the disability has been removed and he is fit to resume the practice of law.

Retired judge James B. “Buddy” Scott Jr. of Oak Ridge died on May 9. He was 83. A 1965 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Scott became the Anderson County Circuit and Criminal Court Judge in 1978 and was reelected every election thereafter until retirement in 2005. Prior to becoming a judge, he served as the Assistant District Attorney General for Roane, Loudon, Blount, Meigs and Morgan counties. His family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge. The funeral will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the American Heart Association or 10 Glenlake Parkway, NE South Tower, Suite 400, Atlanta, GA, 30328.

Gov. Bill Lee will not stop the first execution of his term, rejecting a plea for mercy from death row inmate Donnie Edward Johnson, who is scheduled to die Thursday, the Tennessean reports. Johnson was convicted in the 1984 murder of his wife, Connie Johnson, in Memphis. “After a prayerful and deliberate consideration of Don Johnson‘s request for clemency, and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and will not be intervening,” Lee said in a brief statement. Johnson is set to die by lethal injection at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III today sued Endo Pharmaceuticals and Endo Health Solutions Inc. for making unlawful and false claims about the safety and benefits of its opioid products. The state’s lawsuit, filed in Knoxville, alleges Endo violated the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act and contributed to a devastating public health crisis in Tennessee. The allegations in the 180-page complaint detail how Endo deceptively marketed its opioid products as being less addictive and more effective than others on the market. The complaint alleges that Endo also knew the dangers of its opioid products and failed to clearly disclose those risks.

A first-year Vanderbilt Law School student has been selected by Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP as one of two diversity scholarship recipients. Adora Olisaemeka Onyiuke will also be awarded with a summer clerkship in Bradley's Nashville office. Onyiuke has been a leader with the Black Law Students Association and has served as a mentor for EmbrACE, a student organization for college women to mentor middle school girls in Nashville on age- and gender-related issues. She also is involved with the Legal Aid Society and Law Students for Social Justice.

The Trial Court Vacancy Commission is accepting applications for a Chancery Court Judge in the 24th Judicial District, which covers Benton, Carroll, Decatur, Hardin and Henry Counties. This vacancy was created by the appointment and confirmation of Judge Carma Dennis McGee to the Court of Appeals, Western Section. Qualified applicants must be licensed attorneys who are at least 30 years of age, have been residents of the state for five years, and are residents of the 24th Judicial District. Interested applicants must complete the Trial Court Vacancy Commission Application, which is available at www.tncourts.gov, and submit it to the Administrative Office of the Courts by noon on May 29.
