September 15th marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, so today we thought we would get a head start on recognizing the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the legal profession. Today, we shine the spotlight on an organization close to the TBA YLD, the Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC).

TIRRC is a statewide, immigrant and refugee-led collaboration whose mission is to empower immigrants and refugees throughout Tennessee to develop a unified voice, defend their rights, and create an atmosphere in which they are recognized as positive contributors to the state.

For the past two years, the TBA YLD and young lawyers across the state have partnered with TIRRC to help shorten the gap to access legal services for immigrant and refugee families in Tennessee. Together, we have and will continue to positively impact and change the lives of the Hispanic and Latino American community in Tennessee.

If you want to join the movement for immigrant and refugee rights in Tennessee, look no further than the TBA YLD, and your local bar association for volunteer opportunities.
Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Public Education Committee has recruited eight members to serve during the 2019-2020 year. We now have members from each grand region.

The committee has formed a partnership with the law firm of Nelson Mullins, the Association for Corporate Counsel and the Legal Aid Society of Middle TN & the Cumberlands to implement an initiative to bring pro bono legal services to families with children in public schools to help them establish conservatorships. The committee is committed to disseminating information about the program directly to public school systems, providing additional trainings for newly interested lawyers and hosting a webpage to provide information to the public about how to access the program. This program currently services Middle Tennessee but the committee hopes to expand the program statewide.

Committee Chair Amy Bryant hosted a screening of Nashville Public Television Reports: Aging Matters Legal Help in July 2019. The program was very successful and well attended. Following the screening, there was a panel of four elder law lawyers (Karl Warden, Travenia Holden, Adam Hill and Sonya Bellafant) that answered questions for the audience. The program was sponsored by elder lawyer Michelle Poss (lunch) and Lee Chapel AME Church (facility). There were 50 people in attendance and the panelists were well received. Additionally, the chair helped secure lawyers for four additional NPT screenings.

Another goal for the committee is to promote free online training for conservators as part of a new TBA initiative. The committee will establish a process for providing this resource to the public.

The Public Education Committee met on July 16, 2019, and August 29, 2019. The next scheduled meeting is October 24, 2019. The committee is excited about the programs and the energy of the group is dynamic.

Top 10 Young Lawyer Resources

Having trouble with the basics of getting started as a new lawyer in TN? The Young Lawyers Division has put together the top 10 websites and frequently asked questions for where to go when you need answers.

1.  What advice do you have for new attorneys practicing in multiple counties?
New attorneys should become familiar with the local rules of any judicial district in which they take cases. These rules may be viewed at the following link: https://www.tncourts.gov/courts/court-rules2/local-rules-practice.  New attorneys should also contact the court clerk’s office as there may be additional rules besides those included on the Tennessee State Courts website.  These rules are important to ensure you provide quality legal representation and establish a good rapport with the court. New attorneys should become familiar with the location of the courts in the various judicial districts. An interactive map of the judicial districts is available at the following link: https://www.tncourts.gov/administration/judicial-resources/judicial-district-map. You can contact the court clerk to ensure you have the correct address prior to any court date.

2.  What should I do if I have a question regarding ethics that I am unable to answer?
You should contact the Board of Professional Responsibility at (615) 361-7500. It is an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Tennessee that offers formal ethics opinions and responds to informal ethics inquiries. Further, if you call during normal business hours, you may have the opportunity to speak with an attorney regarding your ethics question.
