The State High School Mock Trial competition rolls on as the regional winners advance and prepare for the state finals in Nashville. Thank you to all of the young lawyers who volunteered as judges and jurors during the regional competitions.

Now, on to the next one. The TBA YLD is seeking volunteers for the State Competition, which will take place on March 22 to 23 at the Metro Davidson County Courthouse in downtown Nashville. The Mock Trial Competition is an incredibly fulfilling and entertaining opportunity to help introduce younger generations to the practice of law. Earlier this month Sen. Raumesh Akbari, D-Memphis, and Rep. Bill Beck, D-Nashville, introduced SB0837/HB1002, which is legislation submitted through the YLD CATALYST program that requires every person applying for a driver’s license or photo identification card to be automatically registered to vote upon the applicant’s 18th birthday.

The CATALYST program was created by the YLD to help teach high school students about their state government, and to provide them with the knowledge and skillset to draft legislation addressing significant issues in their respective communities.  The YLD leadership selected legislation submitted by students from Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences and worked with sponsors, Akbari and Beck, to have it introduced. The students will meet with the sponsors and track their legislation as it makes its way through the General Assembly committee process.

This month we are shining the spotlight on DLI class member Katie Reed!  Katie is a 2L, at LMU Law and aspires to practice criminal law, either as a prosecutor or a defense attorney.  You go girl!  Congrats to Katie for being our law student of the month.  Read on below to learn some interesting facts about Katie.

Why law school?

When I was in the third grade, my father was accused of an awful crime.  He was sent to prison for three years, before getting out on an appeal. I wanted to know about everything that was happening to my family throughout this time. I checked out a book on law from my school’s library over and over and over again- until the librarian gave it to me. It was then that I decided one day I would be a lawyer to help families like mine.

After graduating college, I have worked with victims of crime. They have changed my life in so many ways. They furthered my desire to go to law school.

What's the best gift you've ever received?

The best gift I have ever received was a Pandora leather bracelet by my then boyfriend- now husband. It is not necessarily the gift itself that made it the best, it was the amount of work he put into making sure I received it. Our first Valentine’s day together he was stationed in San Antonio, Texas with the United States Airforce. In order to make my Valentine’s day special he had a friend pick up the bracelet he ordered and deliver it to me with flowers and a card. The extra thought he put into making sure it all happen smoothly was most meaningful for me.

How do you relax?

Exercise is my favorite de-stressor. I love to spin and do circuit training. But if I truly want to relax I love to craft. I recently received a paper/vinyl cutter and I have found myself creating all kinds of stickers, shirts, and signs. But I also enjoy sewing, crocheting, and photography.

What is your favorite place in the world?

My favorite place in the world is Puerto Rico. I visited for the first time on a mission trip in high school. While there I fell in love with the rainforest, culture, and the people. Visiting now always brings joy to my heart.

What’s next on your bucket list?

I really want to take a trip to Disney World as an adult. I have not been since I was ten, and my husband has never gone. Maybe we will make it as a graduation trip.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Tags sticking out of clothing drives me crazy. It always has, and I am not really sure why. If your tag is sticking out and I am around I will be sure to tell you.

What fictional character do you most relate to? Why?

Elle Woods, as cliché as it is. Legally Blonde was my first glimpse of law school. To see the character of Elle be told she would never accomplish what she had wanted to do, and she do it anyway empowered me. Elle gave me the drive and hope throughout school to continue striving for the dream.
