The Tennessee Bar Association's Public Education Committee is partnering with the YMCA to help mentor future lawyers in the Model United Nations and Youth in Government programs. The programs are designed to allow students ages 11-19 to experience the processes of government in a hands-on way. Model United Nations conferences occur in the Fall and Youth in Government conferences happen in the Spring. The YMCA is always in need of volunteers to help our young lawyers argue their cases well and to help our youth justices deliberate wisely. The Public Education Committee seeks volunteers for programs all across the state. Volunteers are welcome help serve for one, two or three days during the conferences. Each conference runs a similar program, just with different students from across Tennessee attending each weekend. For more information about the program, please visit the YMCA's website or contact Elise Dugger

We’re changing things up a little bit this month. Historically, the monthly Young Lawyer Spotlight has, for obvious reasons, only focused on young, licensed attorneys in Tennessee. However, this month we decided to “Brake” the trend and highlight current Nashville School of Law student, Stephanie Brake.

Georgia born and Tennessee raised, Stephanie thought she would answer the call of the arts just as her parents did. However, unbeknownst to her at the time, her undergraduate years would set the course to slowly form a deep, passionate love for the law.
During her tenure at Belmont University, Stephanie’s advocacy skills flourished. Stephanie staunchly fought for LGBT equality at Belmont, she founded the University’s first chapter of Slow Food USA and she was an instrumental volunteer for the University’s Presidential Town Hall Debate. Thereafter, upon graduating, Stephanie was awarded a grant for a farm stay in New Zealand, an experience she attests to be a pivotal time in her life that compelled her to apply to law school.

Now, Stephanie spends her days working full-time at Advocate Capital, a legal finance firm in Nashville and at night she attends Nashville School of Law. She currently serves as the Clinic Coordinator in the School’s newly formed Legal Aid Society and she facilitates pro bono events with the Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition and with Justice for Our Neighbors. Stephanie is also a recent alumna of the TBA YLD’s Diversity Leadership Institute. Upon graduating law school and successful Bar passage, Stephanie aspires to practice regulatory law, employment law or environmental law.

Congratulations Stephanie on all that you have accomplished and on being the August 2018 Tennessee Young Lawyer Law Student Spotlight!

The American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will have its next Assembly at the Midyear Meeting in January 2019.  For those unfamiliar with the Assembly, the ABA YLD Assembly is the principle policy-making body of the ABA YLD.  During the Midyear Meeting, young lawyer issues and resolutions are debated and voted upon. Here's an example of an ABA YLD resolution

The process for submitting resolution ideas is currently under way, and the deadline is Sept. 15.  If you have an idea for a resolution that you would like to submit — but you need help navigating the process to submit your idea — please contact John Rice.  Here's more information on the ABA YLD Assembly.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division is offering funding to attend an intensive training from October 1-4 dealing with Immigration Court Bond Hearings at the Louisiana Immigration Detention Facility. This training is being offered in collaboration with the Southern Poverty Law Center and the AILA Midsouth Chapter.

The goal of this training is to equip young lawyers across the state of Tennessee with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle immigration court bond hearings in the event of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) raid like the recent raid at the Southern Provision Meat Packaging Facility near Morristown, TN.

Hotel and travel expenses will be funded up to $500 per person. This event will be held in conjunction with the Tennessee Bar Association’s Young Lawyer Conference, which will be held in New Orleans from October 4-6. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to attend the conference after their training. Spaces are limited. To view the application, click here. Applications are due by September 5 at 5 p.m. EST. Please send applications to Brittany Thomas Faith .
