The Tennessee Bar Association YLD was selected nationwide as the Affiliate Star of this Quarter for the YLD’s Expungement Clinic Project.  The group was recognized at the YLD Council meeting in Vancouver during the ABA Midyear meeting in February.  
 
The TBA YLD was featured in the February edition of The Affiliate, the ABA Young Lawyers Division’s digital publication.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division Mock Trial Committee is still accepting RSVPs for volunteers for judges, attorneys, paralegals, legal staff and law students to help with this year’s Tennessee State High School Mock Trial Competition.
 
This year’s problem is a civil case and the two-day state competition involving dozens of teams and hundreds of volunteers will take place on March 23-24 in downtown Nashville with a final championship round on Saturday evening. The winning team will get a chance to take part in the National High School Mock Trial competition in Reno, Nevada, on May 10-13, 2018.

Several positions for the Tennessee Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division (TBA YLD) 2018-2019 bar year were certified this month via uncontested election results, including that of vice president. Jackson lawyer Terica Smith was deemed elected vice president, and she will serve as TBA YLD president in 2020-2021.
 
 
 
Petitions for YLD Officer positions were due Feb. 15.  Pursuant to the TBA YLD Bylaws, the following Executive Committee members are deemed elected:
Secretary: John Wilks
Treasurer: Justin B. Faith
Middle Tennessee Governor: Jason F. Hicks
East Tennessee Governor: Brittany T. Faith
 
In addition, five district representative positions were filled by election without opposition, as follows:
District 2: Amanda Howard
District 6: Tessa Lawson
District 8: Tiffany Hagar
District 10: Jamie Durrett
District 14: Brandon Pettes
 
As no young lawyer filed a petition by Feb. 15 to become the West Tennessee Governor, District 4 Representative and District 12 Representative, the Nominating Committee will make nominations and appointments for this seat.

The Tennessee Bar Journal is now accepting submissions for its 2nd Annual Fiction Contest! The period for submissions runs through March 12, 2018. The winner will be notified by May 1. The winning entry will be published in the June 2018 issue and the author will receive a $100 gift card from a favorite independent bookstore. Review the rules and more information here

Chattanooga Bar Association YLD – The Chattanooga Bar Association YLD continues to have monthly social happy hours to promote the YLD and encourage networking with other young attorneys. The YLD’s next Social is tentatively set for April 13.

Knoxville Bar Association Barristers – The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast is a recurring event on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:15 a.m., where the Barristers’ and their volunteers serve breakfast to individuals participating in the services of the Volunteer Ministry Center.  The Barristers Volunteer Breakfast Committee always needs volunteers to serve food or sponsor.
 
Everyone is invited to attend the Barristers’ monthly meetings, which are held on the second Wednesday of every month beginning at 5 p.m. at the Bistro by the Bijou, 807 South Gay Street.  The next meeting will be held on April 11.  Mitchell Panter, Paine | Bickers LLP, is the new Barristers president and Mikel Towe, Lewis Thomason, is the vice president.
 
The Mock Trial Committee co-chairs, Sarah Watson and Amanda Tonkin, would like to express their sincerest gratitude to the attorneys and law student volunteers for serving as bailiffs and scoring/presiding judges during the 2018 Knoxville Regional High School Mock Trial Competition!  This event was a huge success, thanks to the efforts of our volunteers.  We are excited to announce that Jefferson County High School’s “Blue” Team won the event.

Can you donate a couple of hours of your time to assist area service members and military families? The Knoxville Barristers sponsor a Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic on the second Wednesday of each month from noon until 2 p.m. at the Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office. The next Veterans Legal Clinic is scheduled for noon on April 11.  If you are interested in signing up for the Veterans Clinic, you can do so on the KBA’s website.
 
The next Tennessee Faith & Justice Alliance Legal Advice Clinic will be on April 7 at Second United Methodist, 1524 Western Ave, Knoxville, TN 37921. If you are interested in signing up for the Legal Advice Clinic, please register on the KBA’s website.
 
Save the Date - join us at Main Event on April 19 for the first annual Barristers Bowling Night. Bowling will begin at 6 p.m.  The registration fee is $25 and includes the cost of bowling for two hours, shoe rentals, and food catered by Main Event. Cash bar will be available. Prizes will be awarded for the highest score, most strikes in a row, and more!  If you are interested, you can register through the KBA website. Registration closes April 11.
 
The Barristers’ annual Professional Clothing Drive will take place April 9 - 23. Drop-off locations in Knoxville include the First Tennessee building, BB&T building, Bank of America building, federal courthouse, LMU Duncan School of Law, UT College of Law, the City-County building (3rd and 6th floors), and Baker Donelson's office. The Law Week and School Outreach Committee is seeking nominations for the Law & Liberty Award.  All nominations must be received by April 13.  The recipient should be visible to the legal profession and local bar association. Please pass along this request to others in your firm and ask that they also submit their suggested nominees to Luke Ihnen. The winner will be selected by the Barristers Executive Committee and recognized at the Law Day Luncheon on May 3.
 
Please join us for the Barristers and KBA Happy/Social Hour on May 17 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Balter Beer Works, located at 100 S. Broadway! Balter Beer Works is a great local brewery with great beer and food. Come out, have a drink and socialize with your friends and colleagues!

Memphis Bar Association YLD –  The MBA YLD Basketball league is off and running; we have 8 teams competing over nine weeks for a chance at glory.  So far, the River City Ballers and The HEAT have started the season undefeated.  Stay tuned for more updates from the League.
 
On April 19, the MBA YLD will sponsor and coordinate Legal Lines, its annual collaborative event with WREG where News Channel 3 will broadcast and connect viewers with volunteer attorneys through a call-in number.  Viewers will also have the chance to submit questions through WREG's Facebook page, and our volunteer attorneys will be available to answer them live.  If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Quinton Thompson or Sarah Pazar Williams.

Nashville Bar Association YLD – On April 7 at 8:30 a.m. at Edwin Warner Park, the NBA Young Lawyers Division is holding its 14th Annual LogicForce Race Judicata, a 5k and 10k race.  Proceeds from this year's race will benefit two local charities, Able Youth and Achilles International Nashville.
 
The group’s next happy hour is May 3 at Martin’s Bar-B-Q Joint beginning at 5:30 p.m.
 
On May 23, in partnership with the Arts & Business Council, the NBA Young Lawyers Division will host Arts Immersion, a fundraiser for the Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts Program, at Fort Houston.

The YLD Diversity Committee recently selected 21 law students from six different Tennessee law schools for the 2018 Diversity Leadership Institute, a six-month leadership and mentoring program for Tennessee law students. Now in its 8th year, the program is designed to develop skills to succeed as a law student and attorney, empower students to contribute more to the legal community, match students to mentors in a diverse variety of practice areas, and build relationships among students of diverse backgrounds.

Each year the Tennessee Bar Association recognizes outstanding service by attorneys and law students who have dedicated their time to helping others. The awards given and this year’s Honorees are the Harris Gilbert Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year – Daniel Horwitz, the Ashley T. Wiltshire Public Service Attorney of the Year – Mary Gillum, and the Law Student Volunteer of the Year – Alexa Spata. This year, a special Access to Justice Champion Award is presented to Allan Ramsaur in acknowledgement of his accomplishments as a bar leader as well as a leader in the access to justice community. The TBA YLD Board invites specialty and minority bars in the state to name a representative to serve as a funded but non-voting member of the board. The goal of the invited guest program is to increase diversity among the board and provide an opportunity for young lawyers involved in other legal organizations to have a voice in the state bar association.  See a list of all organizations invited to send representatives.
 
Association for Women Attorneys (AWA) –  The Association for Woman Attorneys (AWA) has some exciting events coming up.  First, on May 12 the AWA is sponsoring the MBA Access to Justice – Saturday Legal Clinic.  As always, help is needed and pro bono hours will be given. 
 
Next, the annual "Mary Wolff Memorial Golf Tournament" will be held on June 1 at The Links at Galloway.  Summer schedules fill up quickly, so mark it on your calendars.  Stay tuned for more details. 
 
Finally, although several months out, the AWA's annual Judicial Reception will be held on Dec. 4. Save the date now, and more details to come at a later date. For more information about the AWA, or if you have any questions, please email us or contact Meagan Jones.
