1.      You’ll work with great people.

2.      You get to deal with cutting-edge issues.

3.      At cocktail parties, no one can figure out exactly what you do.

4.      You get to use important-sounding medical terms.

5.      There’s very little math involved.

6.      Because state and federal laws change so frequently…there’s job security.

7.      You get to use lots of acronyms.

8.      It’s easier than going to medical school.

9.      Litigation, transactions, regulatory work --- you can do it all!

10.    No “Rule Against Perpetuities.”

Plan now to join us in the Smoky Mountains when the Tennessee Bar Association meets for the 133rd time on June 11-14 in Gatlinburg at the newly renovated Park Vista Doubletree.

PROGRAMMING starts with the Bench Bar Program on June 12 when author and political insider Keel Hunt and journalist John Seigenthaler take you behind the scenes to bring to life the dramatic transition of power from Gov. Ray Blanton to Gov. Lamar Alexander, and continues through Friday with 12 hours of CLE programming that is included in your registration. Among the programs will be Oliver Diaz’s account of his time under fire as a Mississippi Supreme Court justice, Brian Faughnan’s lively look at ethics issues facing lawyers, an examination of how new laws are changing the “wine and shine” industries, and a return of the popular Better Next Year program.

SOCIAL EVENTS include meeting with your colleagues at the Bench Bar and Lawyers Luncheons, a welcome reception on Wednesday, and an exciting journey through the Titanic Museum, where you will experience what it was like to walk the hallways, parlors and cabins of the Titanic while surrounded by more than 400 artifacts directly from the ship and its passengers. Your journey ends with a reception, dinner and dance.

CONVENTION CENTRAL, the newly renovated Park Vista Doubletree Hotel provides unparalleled views of the Great Smoky Mountains, and a convenient location near an endless supply of shopping, adventure and outdoor recreation. Make your reservations now to get the special TBA room rate of $117 per night. The deadline to reserve you room is May 23, so either visit www.parkvista.com or call 800-421-7275 today.  The Tennessee Bar Association also has arranged specially priced pacakges at two other nearby hotels. These are on or near Gatlinburg's main street, about five minutes from the Park Vista by shuttle or car.

It has been an honor to serve as Vice-Chair and Chair-Elect of the TBA’s Health Law Section. Section Chair Christie Burbank has worked diligently to diversify the Executive Council and expand the courses offered at the annual Health Law Forum and Primer. Historically, the 3-day meeting has been one of the most successful and well-respected health care CLE events in the country, and 2014 promises more of the same. Thank you, Christie.

I am particularly excited to help lead the Section during a time of great change in the health care industry. Tennessee is home to many of the country’s most innovative and successful health care companies, and the need for sophisticated legal advice has never been greater. With great change comes great opportunity, and members of this Section are helping to lead at a critical time. It is truly a unique opportunity for the Section to serve our clients and the health care community as a whole.

Finally, I hope you will continue to share your thoughts and ideas about how we can best serve our members. The TBA’s Health Law Section is blessed to have a large, talented, and diverse membership, and the opportunities for us to serve are many.

I look forward to working with you all.

Sincerely,

Jesse C. Neil

The TBA Health Law Section Executive Council has been very busy this year as we are now finalizing our planning for the ever-popular annual Health Law Forum and Primer to be held this year on October 8th through 10th.  A highlight from this year's Forum will be a session on the Affordable Care Act by Deputy Commissioner Darin Gordon, Director of TennCare and the Division of Health Care Finance and Administration for the State of Tennessee.  Sandy Teplitzky and Julie Kass will join us again for the excellent Fraud and Abuse Update.  Other presentations will include, among many others, a panel discussion on Government Perspectives on Healthcare Fraud and Enforcement, a HIPAA & HITECH update, a Risk Management session, a 2014 Tennessee Law and Legislative update, and Ethics.  The Health Law Section will also host their annual Section luncheon at the Forum that is open to its members by advance reservation.  We hope to see many of you there!

Please look out in the coming months for a brief survey that the Executive Council will be sending to our Section members that will ask questions about the type and setting of your practice and about programming suggestions so that we might better tailor future programming to meet the needs of this Section’s membership.  We hope that you will take just a few minutes to respond to this short survey upon receipt as the greater the membership participation, the better we can serve the membership going forward.

Finally, thank you for allowing me to serve as the Chair of this Section.  I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity, with the Executive Council’s assistance, to further the interests of this Section.  I am particularly proud of our Health Law Section and the impressive Tennessee health care attorneys who make up its membership.

Please let me know if ever you have any questions, concerns and/or recommendations in relation to the TBA Health Law Section.

All my best,

Christie Kizer Burbank, Chair

Thanks to the members of the 2013 - 2014 TBA Appellate Practice Section Executive Council for their service to the Section.   In addition to meeting regularly throughout the year, the executive council partnered with the TBA Access to Justice Committee and TALS on the Appellate Pro Bono pilot program, produced the Court of Appeals Boot Camp, and reviewed legislation proposed by the Tennessee General Assembly.  Thanks to everyone for their hard work and dedication to the work of this Section.
