Sponsor Trivia: Ratification Process
Under Article V of the U.S. Constitution, amendments to the nation’s founding document must be approved by a two-thirds majority vote of both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives and then be ratified by three-fourths of the states. In 1920, Hawaii and Alaska were not yet U.S. states, meaning it took 36 out of 48 states to ratify the 19th Amendment. Tennessee’s vote in support of the 19th Amendment earned it the title “the Perfect 36.” Today, an amendment to the constitution requires the support of 38 states. Source: U.S. Constitution
