Sponsor Trivia: Parliamentary Maneuvers
In the days following the vote, legislators opposed to the amendment held mass rallies across the state with the goal of changing legislators' minds. When the House convened on August 21, only nine anti-suffrage lawmakers were in attendance. The other 38 had skipped town — taking the train over the state line to Decatur, Alabama, where they “hid out” in the lobby of a local hotel. Their goal was to prevent the assembling of a quorum, but the pro-forces proceeded to do business without them. The pending motion to reconsider was called up and voted down, and the ratified amendment was returned to the Senate. From there it went to the governor for certification.
