Sponsor Trivia: November Elections Disappoint
After the passage of the amendment, the fragile coalition of women supporting suffrage again splintered. Women did not agree on what should be done next. Many wanted complete equality for women while others wanted to see special legislation to protect women and children. Many became frustrated and disillusioned after the elections of 1920. Women did not flock to the polls to vote and did not run for office as expected. One Tennessee suffragist became involved in Gov. A.H. Roberts’s re-election campaign for governor but he lost. Roberts blamed the suffragists and his support of the 19th Amendment for his defeat. Source: Tennessee State Museum
